In my ever-expanding exploration of new pipe related terms, I have come across this one: Brindle. Exactly what is it?

Brindle stems are also called Cumberland. The stem has 2, or more, different colors in it. The way the material is extruded makes it look like a marble effect. It can be a very elegant look to certain pipes. Dunhills are famous for their brindle/Cumberland stems. Savinelli and other makers also use them in certain lines.

My Rattray Hihland below has a brindle stem.

Brindle is actually the correct term. It became known as Cumberland after the Dunhill Cumberland line of pipes became popular. They came with Brindle pipe stems, thus Cumberland became synomous with the stem. Much like Klenex, the brand vs Tissue, the item.
Traditionally it is black and red swirled together, but lately I have been seening many new iterations that are just wonderful. They have blue, brown and green that I have seen, all swirled with black. I am aure there are probably more of them.
