I am just leaving what does not currently float my boat in mason jars. From years of smoking cigars, what I did not like originally changed with time and I liked them later. My tastes changed and I learned not to give up until I was sure years later I still did not like it. Now since I am new to pipes, it is way to soon to give up on any blend except with the exception of "Crooner!" I down right hated that stuff and it got to the trash before I did.

If I try a blend that I don't like, I put it away for 6 months or so and then check it out again. One of my favorite blends Mac Baren Old Dark Fired I didn't enjoy when I first tried it but after letting it dry out a bit I tried it again about 8 months later and fell in love. Sometimes it could be the pipe you used, other times it may be too wet, I always give it another try in different pipes and smoke at least a few bowls before I definitely decide it is not something I will enjoy.

I once opened a tin of Sutliff French Quarter. I knew right away this blend wasn't meant for me. I thought that it might remind me of home. Instead, it reminded me of my x-wife. Waited a couple of weeks and tried it again. I dumped a 3.5oz tin into a flower pot on my patio. The plant died within a month!

The only one I ever encountered was a Borkum Riff one I picked up years ago. Actually, turned me off from being willing to try another OTC for a long time. I can't even recall which flavor it was, to this day I just avoid all of them.
I find it odd too, I pride myself on being able to pull out redeeming qualities for blends even if I don't find it the most enjoyable for my personal tastes. That Riff though.... :::::::shiver:::::

There are a few blends that I dislike, such as Penzance, that I keep to share with those who do like them, but who can't ever get a chance to enjoy. It's my quaint way of giving the finger to the obsessed hoarders. Tastes do change and it's possible that I might someday come to like a currently despised blend. And if not, there's always the possibility of a trade for something that I like but don't have in stock. For now, the stacks of "Balkan Sobranie", Penznace, and a few other "fabled" blends are happily aging.

I just can't seem to find a C&D blend that I enjoy. I completely appreciate the brand and in no way am knocking it- its just for me I can't seem to come across anything that's enjoyable for me. I let Exhausted Rooster age for 2 years and now its "okay" to me.
I'm realizing I have a few things I'd rather just trade than wait on- will probably do that soon.

As an example, I have a lot of ODF that I can't seem to fall in love with. I'm trading a bunch of it with a forum member for Anni Kake, which I enjoy.

SG 1792 is foul.
Freakiefrog, I love almost all the ones you hate! I find that funny.
Do keep them and retry at 6 months and 1 year before you give up on them.

Royal Yacht. There are so many I haven't tried I see no reason to get this ever again. I also avoid aromatics.

Haha Saint...I loved that...it must have been flavored with Bourbon Street toppings...lol
Scrooge, trying taking the stuff you don't like to a B&M or local pipe club meeting to share...we do that all the time in our club...someone buys something they really don't like so they bring it to a club meeting and swap or share...there is almost always someone who will like it and swap you something for it...

McClelland Dark Star is pretty nasty. Looks and smells bad too. I read on here that you need to dry it out for a few days, then let it sit for 6 months and then it's good. We'll see.

Seacaptain, Dark Star makes me salivate just thinking about it, but yeh, I don't think it is even possible to pop a tin and smoke it fresh.
The one that I have found to be totally repulsive, even after trying various pipes and waiting are GH&co Dark Flake scented. There are many that I would never buy again or even try again, and one brand I don't like, but that Dark Flake, blech. I do keep the unscented version in the cellar. I love the strong flavor and nic hit, but that scented stuff would make me want to lick the dog's ass to get rid of the nasty flavor, if the carpet wasn't handy.

There is absolutely no chemistry in my education, but as many guys have already noted, just cellaring it will frequently make a less than favorable experience change to something much better down the road. While I have not smoked anything that made me want to hunt up the dog yet, Michael :) but there have been a pretty good number of aromatics I could live without upon the first encounter. Later, the juice melded into something much smoother and acceptable. While many many folks like it, I am not a huge Latakia fan either, though.

I have finally given up on McBaren Plumcake. Has anybody noticed the nasty stale cigarette after taste? It was a nice smoke for about 9 months. Then I began to force myself to smoke it. I have an unopened tin that I will be staring at in disgust. Doubt I will ever crack the seal.

Hands down... Ennerdale Flake. To quote one dead on review: 'If you've ever wondered what it's like to smoke a urinal cake, this is your chance'.
