I purchased a new Peterson Jekyll & Hyde a few weeks ago. The first thing I did was wipe out the chamber with a wet paper towel to remove as much coating as possible. I've been fighting a cold for the past two weeks and I will be firing up that Jekyll & Hyde today.Brand new peterson pipe has flaking off finish inside bowl? Normal?
Brand new system deluxe. I do have to say it has one of the ugliest rustifications I've ever seen lol.I posted a larger pic. Hmm....I don't have an answer, but I am interested in the responses. What Peterson is it?

Has it been smoked? Bowl coating is not cake but only a facsimile of cake. It protects the manufacturer against hard puffers and flaws. According to Peterson Pipe Book co-author Mark Irwin, Peterson uses charcoal, gum arabic and water. This isn't the porous hard pre cake forming type coating though. It's like a shellac finish type coating.
You bought a pipe that you think is ugly? Bless you!Brand new system deluxe. I do have to say it has one of the ugliest rustifications I've ever seen lol.
Ahem. That's the general idea in these forums, I believe.I think you should . . . set shit on fire.
Setting SHIT on fire, Is this a Semois thread now?Ahem. That's the general idea in these forums, I believe.
Why, yes. Yes, it could be. You're a fellow semois fan, I see!Setting SHIT on fire, Is this a Semois thread now?
Peterson excels at ugly rustication. You've chosen wisely.I do have to say it has one of the ugliest rustifications I've ever seen lol.
I know it's not cake, I was talking about the coating manufacturers use to pre-carbeurize the bowls. This is very thin coating unlike a new savinelli.Has it been smoked? The part in focus looks like bowl coating.
But there is also a ring around the top perimeter of the bowl that's out of focus. I assume it's also bowl coating but it's hard to tell.

No bowls it's brand new. I just opened it from the box like this. I can rub with a dry finger and flake it off. Some have removed Peterson coating with hot water and a paper towel.
Need to know: How many bowls have you put through? Reamed? If none, just flush it out and smoke it nice and slowly.
What is the nice thick charcoal feeling coating you get on like a new savinelli or Boswell? Some chamber coatings do flake. Depends on the formula used.
