Well after 1 year and 10 months, they are gone and I can now smoke my pipe without the stem hitting the wires, what a relief.

My older sister had braces when she was in junior high, but I only had a retainer for a while. I think straighter teeth probably wear better than otherwise. You may well have saved money in the long run. Congratulations on taking the leap.
