Didn’t he vanish with the box or something? There have been so many road smashes I have lost count. The only one who made it work really well was Dan which is why I was always willing to donate good shit to get the box up and running!
He came back briefly. Started a thread on a new box pass and then disappeared again once people started asking him questions about the original box and its contents.

Well, that is too bad. I love the idea of starting one with an AirTag in it. But not something I would be up to starting on my own.

I hope @RustiePyles CPG is OK!

I don't like it when someone tries to get something good started and then gets critisized and second guessed about it If it doesn't work exactly as planned. People can be very demanding of volunteers.

While I wholeheartedly agree it is cursed, a fool's errand, etc... I loved the box pass in years past. I tried dozens of blends I would have otherwise not had access too.

It's like communism. A great idea that is hard to realize... but there are always people willing to give it another try. ;)
A great idea?

@wyfbane : I think the phrase you are looking for is 'It is a great idea but has never been properly tried out. With these super smart people with a University education this time we will definitely get it right and everyone will be happy...'. Fast forward three months and everyone is starving, emigrated or the box has been nationalized by the vanguard of the revolution who are self identifying as anarcho-syndicalists with unusual national characteristics! rotf

Most people are almost entirely trustworthy and dependable, until they aren't.
I'm not implying that this is what happened to Mr. Pyles, I'm JUST strongly suggesting the possibility.
He has had a serious accident and is recovering. I had sent pipes to him to be restored and he always sent them back with first-class workmanship, so he has never nicked anything from me. He still has one of my pipes, but in the grand scheme of things that's pretty unimportant.

I really doubt he has walked off with the box pass, he just has far more important things to deal with than an internet pipe forum.

@jaingorenard-that is sad news and I’m praying he makes a full recovery.
Fletch is a solid guy, and I worry about the severity of his condition.
I can only imagine getting seriously hurt at such a time as he was in (renovating a new residence, packing, moving, and I know he was busy with work issues).
In the grand scheme of things the info and logistics of what was going to be a solid box pass, and some pipe work (he’s got one of mine too) pales in comparison.
It’s sad that many are only thinking of the loss of what they didn’t even have (the fun of the pass) to the extent that it’s referred to like he absconded with a treasury with malicious intent.

As a former Box Pass shepherd, I can tell you that at some point, it goes bad. Whether that is by neglect, malicious intent or some other complicated psychosis, is almost irrelevant. However, the catagory of “guy who takes on too many projects” was the most common. We’ve all met him (hell, I AM that guy), and the most predictable. He’s eager to do all kinds of stuff, overextends himself, the when something goes wrong, there’s no median strip, no cushion, and it all folds. No premeditation, no malicious intent.

I always feared this sort of thing, having responsibility to the dozens of people who contributed time and effort and entrusted prized tobaccos to me.

My heart goes out to Fletch and his family as he continues to recover.

Hell, I'd be the ideal candidate to run one of these then. I got nothing going on. Work, home, stare at this screen, go to work again. Not going to do it though, would cut into my daily routine. 😉

Take away human nature and it is. But one cannot ever take away human nature, so communism will forever be a fool's errand. Saddens me that it is a lesson that needs to be relearned over and over again, especially when it pops up in the US.

That is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I spent 22 years in the Army, and I started there at the tail end of the direct opposition to communism. I am not a fan.
