I know there are general schools of thought regarding bowl shape for flakes and VA’s, but what about aromatic blends? All other factors being equal as far as drying time and the like of course.
I seem to recall an article or video suggesting a short, wide bowl with a loose pack being a good starting point.

Thanks!
Pete

Aromatics styles vary greatly…

Have a look at this article if you haven’t read it before.

@TampaPete basically complex blends do better in wider chambers. But pipe dimensions and materials can vary, so it’s always best to experiment with the pipes you own, to see which work out the best.

Many billions of electrons have given their lives in this debate and there still seems to be no consensus.

In my vast (OK, maybe only half-vast) experience and research, I have found that there atwo non negotiables.

1. Open at the top.
2. Small hole at the bottom.
Finally, a clear answer :col:

I wouldn't expect aromatics to behave differently in different chamber shapes/sizes... generally not enough complexity going on there.

Other than smoke duration, I've never found a difference in blends from one pipe to another.

Would you have thought so if you hadn't heard it?

Yes, I think so, largely because I've tested it several times (side-by-side comparisons of a blend in multiple pipes w/ different chamber types) and there's a noticeable difference. I've also tried the same thing with conical chambers and haven't noticed the intensified flavors everyone talks about, which suggests to me that it's not entirely down to the power of suggestion. 😄

Smoking cadence will have the biggest effect.

Apart from that a bowl as deep as it is wide, or deeper, gives a proportionally greater amount of unburnt tobacco to heat up and release the flavorings into the smoke stream.

Any pipe smoked too hot will do worse with any blend, guaranteed.

Cooling and Flavor Release Aromatics tend to have added flavoring and moisture, which can lead to goopiness or excessive moisture buildup. A shorter and wider bowl can help cool the smoke and reduce the chance of it becoming overly moist. This shape also allows the aromatic flavors to come through more distinctly.
A reply worthy of Microsoft's Clippy. Thank you.
