Recently picked up a really nice unsmoked Rolando Negoita estate pipe from smokingpipes.com. The bowl coating on the pipe is very smooth and clear (almost like glass; have no experience with this type of bowl coating and not sure exactly what the coating is). Anything special I should pay attention to when breaking it in?

MCJ, there are a few chamber coating recipes which are clear. So a variety of possibilities. It might also be that Rolando sanded the chamber with very fine sandpaper which could also leave an almost mirror like finish.

Personally, no matter if the chamber has a coating or not, I do not do anything special to "break in" a pipe. I fill it to 1/4" of an inch below the rim, light, tamp, re light, and enjoy.

Regards
Mike

I just fill new pipes and smoke them. I've heard a lot of stuff on YouTube about filling it 1/4 or 1/2. Maybe they're right. I just don't do it, havent had an issue. I do shake the ash out with my hand over the pipe on a new pipe to help build a little cake. I believe that works, I have pipes I built cake in pretty quick doing that. But lately I don't always do that either I forget.
