Hi all,
I smoke mostly tinned tobacco (Penny Farthing shag from G.L. Pease is my go-to), a few bowls a day, so that a tin usually lasts me about a week. I keep finding that there’s always a certain portion, maybe the bottom 1/5 or so of the tin, that’s just not as good as the rest. It seems to lack flavor and insist on burning too hot one way or the other: I’ve tried drying it out when it seems too wet, and moisturizing it when it seems too dry, but neither seems to help much.
Has anyone else encountered this? And is there anything to do about it? My guess is that it’s just a shag problem (finer cut = more exposure to air = quicker oxidation = more stale tobacco), but I’d love to have someone prove me wrong.
Thanks!

As I'm working my way down a tin/jar I try to grab a little of the bottom portion to top the bowl off with. With some tobaccos it also helps start the lighting of a bowl, I'd say more so with flakes. I've typically found the dregs of the tin/jar to be too fine and to burn too hot for me if I try to smoke an entire bowl of it.

The tobacco will dry out as you use the tin.
Maybe your taste is the same as mine. I don't like dry tobacco, the flavour is completely lost IMO.
I don't use tIns anymore, but put the tobacco in a small mason jar. That way it stays fresh.

By the time you get to that point, it's usually broken up finer and dryer. But I don't find much difference if any in the flavor. In fact, I'd say the final 1/4 of a tin is usually the best for me.
Agree, smoking the dregs of a 1 year old tin on HU Louisiana broken and it's fantastic, have maybe 1.5 bowl left.

If I don't have enough for a full bowl, I keep the dregs for the next tin I open of that blend. It makes good kindling for fold and stuffed flakes.
