Can I chime in here? I am trying my best to get the ash and cake all the way to the bottom but the air hole is above some of the tobacco at the very bottom. This means that I get a nice dry grey ash/cake up to the air hole and a little "wet" spot right at the bottom :( Any advice would be appreciated.

If the air hole is above the bottom of the bowl, Pixie, then you've got a substandard pipe. Sorry for the bad news, but the situation you described is precisely the reason why one should pay a little more for a well made pipe.

I have noticed with some aros that I've smoked that the last third of the bowl has a tendency to get a little sour to me. I usually dump some of the ash, retamp, and run a pipe cleaner or two through to get rid of as much of any unwanted flavors I can. This helps some.
With English and Va's I typically haven't had this problem.

Just my luck. Oh well, I knew I was buying a budget pipe I paid like $30 for it. I'll smoke this till I get something better. Thanks Bigvan,

About half the time, I actually find that the bottom half of the bowl goes better and tastes better. In this case,

the top half takes time to settle down, can require some tamping and relights, and the flavor doesn't get together

until the heat has broken up the tobacco a little more, and the tamping has settled things in place. Sometimes

this enables me to get excellent flavor and burn the bowl right down to white ash. Of course, the best is when

the whole bowl smokes evenly with good flavor.

If it stops tasting good then stop smoking.

Agreed, it is rare, but when it does happen, I dump what is left.
I have not had to battle with the vicious nicotine monster in many a moon.
Not even with cigars.
I fear I have bested the beast in strength and have become its master.
LMFAO! My nephew used to tell me that. Then I handed him a Toboada rolled cigar made just for guys who say that. He couldn't finish the cigar...I told him come see me in anther 30 years and try again

No you can't. He was one of the few rollers who was allowed to leave his Island country for vacations & rolling events in various places besides the U.S. He passed away a couple years ago so finding any legitimate cigars for sale that he made is hard. I think the person I was getting them from quit parting with his stash too...which is sad, I only have two ASS kickers left and none of the regular cigars.
