Bogus Pipe Lighter

I bought a Lucienne pipe lighter for $22 plus tax from a local store, and I have refilled it a couple times with top end butane, but before and after my last refill a few days ago, the lighter has been working like crap. I have to click it over and over to get it to light. I had to turn it way up just to get it to light at all.
Are there any good butane pipe lighters out there for around that price? I still don't want to spend $50 or $100 on a lighter, hell I could get a new pipe for that!

Question: Do you vent (bleed) the lighter of any nonflammable propellent before filling? I also find that while sometimes a wee touchy gas lighters should be held upright with the fuel supply inserted from the bottom. This way the fuel container remains upright, fuel on the top, propellent in the bottom. Store the fuel upright and do not shake or you will be likely to get more propellent than fuel in the lighter.

I have the one from Mr. Brog. It is ok, quality of materials is pretty low but it fits the purpose well.

Carcosa, I bought a Regal with the 90 degree head and the three tools for the same price. It only works with the flame on full and with quadruple refined butane. Even with that I find it performs the best when I keep it in my pocket to keep it warm. It pisses me off when it acts up, but I love the damn thing.

I've been there carcosa. Although not everyone's first choice, I use the Zippo insert for pipes. For a backup, I use a trusty Bic. I wish I had the money back from a few of those crappy pipe lighter purchases. I don't waste money on fancy butane pipe lighters anymore.

I think I might just stick with a Bic, don't really notice the taste that much, and if I do it's only while lighting it, but its cheap and works every time.

I have vertigo lighter that looks like the old boy type lighter.. won't lite half the time...use the best fuel I can get. Tried everything venting, fueling upside down, upright. Pisses me off because the think the design of the lighter is cool.

Anyone else have problems with this type of lighter?

I have never Liked a pipe light,everyone I ever had would never keep working.

So I stay with the wooden match or use a Bic, works evrytime. :D

+1 on the Bic. No style points but cheap and they work (almost) every time and in (almost) all kinds of weather.

Zippo's are indestructible. and are backed by a lifetime no questions asked guarantee. If I dropped a $150 Old Boy, I would cry.
If I knew a Corona Old Boy worked 100% of the time all the time then I would buy one. Especially in the wind. I never tried the top of the line in the design I like. I still have tons of the best butane money can buy but personally I can't whip out anymore money for lighters as I have what works for me and need to make sure my money goes toward that next sweet pipe.
Harris Own's the Corona Old Boy. Perhaps he can chime in to the reliability and value.

That's about the best way to go, carcosa. They work, and they're cheap.. and if you feel the need to fancy them up, just Google "Bic lighter covers" and peruse the sheaths you can use to cover them.

terry, the Vertigo lighters are garbage, they break all the time and are made from crap materials. I bought one at my local b/m, he replaced it twice for free and I do not have the heart to ask for another as the third also broke within a few weeks.
carcosa, either use a bic or bite the bullet and buy a Corona Old Boy. There is not another pipe lighter in that price range that will last as long or be as dependable. I have had mine for over 13 years and it is still going strong. I can use it outside as long as there is not a ten mile an hour plus wind going. The flame is not as wind proof as a Zippo, but the flame is so much easier to control than a Zippo. I have a Zippo and rarely use it, the flame is unwieldy and difficult to use for the end of the bowl.
I have tried almost every lighter brand out there as I have a lighter fetish and bang for the buck the Old Boy is king. I also have an IM Corona Pipemaster which is an old boy but with an electronic ignition. I love the lighter and the tamper is the largest of all the Corona lighters. The jury is still out though in terms of reliability because I have only owned it for about 6 months, but so far so good.

doc, you are a lucky guy, everyone I know who has bought one has had it break. Glad to hear yours is still working. When they work they are a good lighter, although the tamper is a bit short.
