I'm not a fan of Dylan and put his winning, as previously stated, on par with Obama winning it. It's just a political award these days, a way of making a statement. Personally, I think Limp Bizkit was robbed.

Agree with everyone who expressed dismay over the commercial and political depths to which the Nobel Prize has sunk in recent times.

His unorthodox vocal stylings are certainly not to everyone's taste, but wasn't the award for his song writing?

No. Literature. Which he's written quite a bit of, songs notwithstanding.
He's an excellent and influential writer. Nobel material? I have no idea, as I have no clue whatsoever what their standards or selection process is.
Good for him.

Gotcha. I did not know of him as a writer other than songs, so thank you for that info. Still and all, my meaning was that he was not getting an award for his singing but for his writing, as it impacted modern culture.

If it's literature then I really think Henry Rollins over him.

"Black Coffee Blues" was a great read. I haven't thought about that in over 20 years. I need to dig around in my Boxes of books and see if I can find that one.

I agree with Beefeater33, the award is well deserved. Some of his lyrics are poetry, some stream of consciousness, but he has a talent for words. He has inspired several generations of songwriters for good and not so good results. I haven't listened to every song he's written. Lot's of times I don't like his voice. But lyrically, he's got it.

yup, agreed.

Although.... when he released his blues stuff in the '90s I thought he had really hit his stride as far as vocal style/music style. Plus it was used for a Victoria's Secret commercial. Great visual memories

I also agree about Henry Rollins. I saw Black Flag with and without him.
It was better with.
Limp Bizkit was just a bad Korn cover band.

Vegas Baby!!!
Not to hijack the thread.......Korn was better when they were on drugs.....when they got clean they were a bad cover band of themselves.

I'm a Dylan fan and consider his lyrics genius. But, I don't think songs deserve a Nobel literary award.

Literature has stand on its own, songs do not, they're not songs with our musical accompaniment.
I think Dylan not responding is his way of saying that he agrees with me.
More importantly did you see the nominations for the Rock Hall of Fame (nee Pop Hall of Fame, Hall of Shame).

Don't get me started.

None of this makes sense.
Before they go public with the awards the Nobel Committee always contacts the chosen few to make sure they'll appear. If they choose not to make the trip to Stockholm then Candidate #2 is selected - provided they elect to go to Stockholm.
Unless the rules have changed Dylan, originally, said he'd attend. And now, he's not returning calls?
Our current sitting President was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, before he was inaugurated, in the hope of better things to come. (Consequently, I'll leave the results of that award to better minds than mine.)

Initially, I was turned off immediately, in my bourgois cloud of prejudice, and missed appreciation for the ruminations he so cleverly authored.

It was Nashville Skyline that caused me to start to listen more often and closely to his earlier and subsequent offerings.

Johnny Cash has always been welcome to my ears, so I was impressed that he would deign to collaborate with the nasal mumbling of the prolific town crier who seemed to arouse controversy with every breath.

Then, there's this little tune.
