I've seen Albert King, SRV, Lonnie Mack, Antone's Anniversary Party, Clapton, Bo Diddley, Kim Wilson (with and without the Thunderbirds) and many others. I played blues harmonica in a few local bands during the 80s and 90s but haven't played much in awhile.

Big, get em out, like a bike, nothing better than a good harp. I like the Harpoon Man a lot, Buffet. Mayall used to have a gun belt with harps around it instead of bullets. (if my memory is still 50% here) Ain't no blues without a harp. MPI

"Blues will put scars on you." You said it, old Cajun. Some words of wisdom there.
As for the Blues, I love all kinds of players, but have a special fondness for Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Hendrix, Clapton, Keith Richards, Little Walter, James Cotton... the list goes on...

We saw SRV a few months before he died. I just found the news clipping of his death that I had stuck in one of his CD's.(concert with Jeff Beck)
My best memory was at Robert Cray concert in PA. He stopped between songs and said to his band "what are playing next". It was real quiet and I yelled "whats the forecast call for?". He laughed and replied, "pain" than started playing "The Forecast Calls for Pain" (my favorite Cray song w/the Memphis Horns). Well, that and getting to watch my buddy interview BB King for our local radio station.

(post script: wow, what a horrible 1980s' video!)

I'm a huge blues fan. I prefer Mississippi Delta Blues. I love the raw grittiness of it. Some of my favorites are Robert Johnson, Son House, Honeyboy Edwards, Charlie Patton, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Peetie Wheatstraw. I listen to blues most of the time in my workshop while making pipes.

SRV is about my favorite in addition to all the cross-over rock guitar players. Did anyone see the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year? Well unlike the title more and more blues artists have and are being added. This year Albert King was inducted and I was shocked to see a picture on today’s PC TV of him jamming with a pipe!

Here is one wild looking pipe!

Some really good stuff you guys have listed in this thread!
If you are in a mellow mood check out Junior Kimbrough. He is one of the greats from the lesser known Northern Mississippi style. I love the relaxing, hypnotic vibe of his music. (and am working on stealing some of his licks!:^)

Just wanted to add that there are three young guys pushing the genre. Derek Trucks, Jack White and John Mayer. Do not under estimate Mayers playing, BB did and got that "oh shit" look on stage a few years ago :)

Buddy Guy has a new, two-disc CD out called "Rhythm & Blues" and it is outstanding. He was in an AP story in todays paper advocating blues on the radio.

I'm with wayneteipen--love the old delta blues men. Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Wille McTell, Charlie Patton, Blind Boy Fuller, King Solomon Hill, Blind Lemon Jefferson. Some awfully scratch recordings from some of these, but it's worth it to hear what they have to say in their unearthly tones. Almost scary at times.

Big Blues fan here. Love SRV and even caught a show he did with the Allman Brothers at the Pier in NYC. Amazing!
Also really like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Blues Rock guitar players like, Jimmy Page and Bo Diddley.
Speaking of which, here's something I like to listen to in the mornings to get the day going:
Bo Diddley - Road Runner

Watching 'the Blues Brothers' a few years ago really turned me onto blues, now I listen to a fair bit of it, particularly Howling Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, BB King, John Lee Hooker and of course Jake and Elwood !!!

Check out these sites for some awesome "old school" blues. You can find some great compilation albums at the second site.

Fred McDowell, Willie Mctell, Leadbelly, Rev. Gary Davis, R.L. Burnside.

Fred McDowell played his whole life but got his first check when he sued the Rolling Stones for stealing his songs. He bought a new pair of shoes and the first guitar he ever owned his self.

Leadbelly sang his way out of prison, twice.

RL Burnside plead not guilty to a murder charge. He told the judge "I just shot the sonofabitch in the head, the dying part was between him and the Lord".
