I think that's actually from steam. If I'm mindlessly puffing away, I might get that gurgle. When that happens I just ram a cleaner through without removing the stem. I've heard somewhere that occasionally exhaling through your pipe (blowing a bit of smoke up and through the bowl) can help prevent that, but I've no idea if that's true. I do it myself out of habit after learning that, and rarely get the moisture in the stem issue.
This is what I do as my first attempt - exhale through the pipe. Not as good as a pipe cleaner, but for a tiny gurgle, it can do the job.

I just remove the stem and blow. Easy to do when outside, but i use a pipe cleaner or bit of absorbant paper --paper towel, toilet paper, fastfood napkins-- when inside. Though I do try to pipe clean out the shank when done, as the shank will be getting hit by that same moisture aswell.

Some will advise that you don’t want to pull stem out right after pipe is smoked .. bad for mortise tenon thing …
I either blow a little , or insert a pipe cleaner for a second which always fix the problem .
Yes sir, learned that by boogering up a few pipes when I first started
