It does amaze me how a bit of ugly weather can cause so much hysteria amongst government officials. I suppose it has to do with budget and size of the population. I'm glad I live in a region with fewer people when I read the horror stories. Up here there, would be some warnings, people would check the survival gear in their vehicles, fill up with gas and get on with life. About the only time a major highway would be closed is an avalanche or when they are "shooting" avalanche areas with a howitzer. Then the road is only closed for a couple of hours at most.
I'm not casting aspersions, I just find it interesting how different parts of the country handle certain problems.
