I’ve tried my hand at carving a few pipes for fun and have enjoyed it even though the results weren’t anything impressive. Recently my friend gave my some chunks of black walnut to carve with, but I read that they are toxic so kinda bummed. I was wondering if I made an insert out of meerschaum or briar or some other hardwood to go in the bowl if that would solve the issue.

I think the black walnut is very pretty so it would be cool to try to carve something from it.

Thanks for any replies.

Not sure I'd use black walnut for a pipe. Not sure I'd go through all the trouble of an insert for it either. You'd still be sucking smoke through the air hole with an insert. The way I look at it, if it were good for pipe making it would have been done years ago. Stick with the established woods. I've carved black walnut and I seen how it stain my hands and I believe it's very toxic to horses.
