Larry's blend has been my go to blend for about a year now, after seeing soapy great reviews for black house I ordered some bulk to try. I have to say I am not that impressed with BH. It burned the crud out of my mouth. I smoked 3 bowls now over a period of a week out of the same cob I smoke LB but I just can't keep it from biting me. Anyone here know why that could be? What is so different from these two blends?

I found Larry's Blend rather bland and one-dimensional. I very much enjoy Black House, I find it much more complex and flavorful than Larry's Blend. I guess that's why they make so many different blends!

I agree Larry's is a bit more bland, I also prefere vanilla ice cream over chocolate or any other flavor, I'm just a bland guy I guess :p I enjoy the flavor of both blends what I was talking about was why does BHbite when LB doesn't? Is there different Virginia's in them or something else that I'm having a reaction to? There both about the same when it comes to moisture I can't think of anything else that could be causing it.

I have been having a hard time keeping Black House lit in my pipe. This is by far the worst tobacco I have had as far as that goes and it does bite a bit but not bad for me. I am gonna go and blend it with a bit of CH and give it a shot.

I'm more of a Larry's Blend kind of guy, but I do smoke Black House. The latter seems to need some age, at least judging from the 2 oz tin that I just bought. I'll finish the tin, but if I get more, I'll be shelving it away for at least six months.

Rothnh thanks for the information, I wish there was some way I could find out exactly which leaf I am having trouble with.
05venturer, glad you found a mix that works for you, it's also always good to meet another person who is a fan of LB :)

I have had no trouble keeping Black House lit, or with tongue bite. It's a pretty nice smoke, although I think I prefer Larry's.

Tanless, lucky you. I know it's not a blend that normally bites people which is why I was asking questions.
Jud, yeah no problems keeping it lit either. BH comes pretty dry straight from the tin and smokes well, I can tell it is a very good blend.
Rothnh, that is a good ideal whenever I feel like a drive there is a really nice store the state over from me. You think if I e mail Pipeandcigars that Russ would have any ideal or suggestions on what to change?

I bought 4oz of LB off all the reviews and found it to be a lat bomb. I found the max Latakia for me is FMOT. I traded the rest away. Don't think it's bad tobacco, would have liked to have tried it before he added the extra Latakia to the blend.

Dragonslayer ten to midnight was the original blend before Russ tweaked it and added more Lat so you could try that. I personally don't like it but that's because I want more Lat than it has to offer.

Ah cool, I'll get someone to send me a sample and see what it tastes like without so much Latakia. Too much just masks everything for me. I don't mind a little, so not a hater.

I agree. It could be a leaf in the BH that is not agreeing with you. As I was once told that it could be the blender or the blending process too.
I went through the same thing with BH. Not with bite, but the taste. Not feeling it at all. I have a sample that I want to get rid of so bad! Don't like throwing out tobacco.
Anyway, I love LB. Good stuff. :puffy:

The big differences between Larry's Blend and BlackHouse are (as mentioned) the Orientals. the black Cavendish, the dark-fired and the Latakia percentage. It's unlikely that the problem comes from either the Latakia or the Orientals (Larry's contains Smyrna, BlackHouse Yenidje), but the black Cavendish is made of Green River Burley and the dark-fired is a similar strain, so you may have a sensitivity to some of the darker Burleys. I didn't consider the red Virginia because that's a component in both tobaccos. I hope this was of some help.

After my last post in this thread, I decided to dive into Black House with a bit more conviction. After all, it won that award in 2011 and it's developed somewhat of a cult following on this board. Well, people, I have to say that it's really growing on me. I now deem Black House at least as enjoyable as Larry's Blend and perhaps a tad more.

I usually prefer complexity in a blend, but I also greatly prefer Larry's Blend over Blackhouse, which I found to be disappointing. When I want something complex, I reach for Magnum Opus, which I feel is far superior to either Larry's or BH.
