Just took advantage of p&c's pipe sale and 15% off your whole purchase. I bought a new 2010 Stanwell pipe of the year pipe which I really liked and also read it was designed by Tom Eltang. They also have a special that all Stanwell pipe purchases receive a free Stanwell lighter. On top of that I added 4 tins I've been wanting to try: White Knight, Nightcap, plum pudding, and Mississippi River. So in summary, a nice Stanwell pipe, Stanwell lighter, 4 tins of tobacco, and also a free copy of the p&c 2016 calendar, all for $95! Here's a photo of the pipe:

There are a lot of really beautiful pipes that I don't own, and I really appreciate knowing about these sales, but I just don't need a new pipe right now. I am staying out of the whole "black Friday/cyber Monday" thing.
I'm hoping P&C does the same as last year. On Dec 30th they had a REAL GOOD sale. On orders over $250 you got a full 25% discount, and I included some blends that were already on sale in my order.
This, on the other hand would probably get my attention.

Hint to gentlemen:
Your wives are infinitely better at couponing and sales than you will ever be.
They can relate to this, especially a 25% off sale.
Women are just better than men at a lot of things, and vice-versa. A little Cyber Monday or year-end-sale madness could be a great way to bridge the divide.

If you're going to buy it anyway, get it on sale, but I agree that "conspicuous consumption" can be annoying.
Not always, however. Our fellow citizens buying porn, smartphones, video games consoles, etc. have radically reduced the cost of technology.
Now if our disposal system was just up to snuff...

I just don't need a new pipe right now.
Most of the sales are store-wide, so it's a good opportunity to stock up on tobacco at a slight discount.
Want to save some real money? Don't buy anything.
That's some solid wisdom right there. I don't think you just buy something for the sake of a sale or discount (unless Dunhill has a 90% off all pipes sale), but as deathmetal put it, if you're already looking to buy something, you might as well get it at a discount. I've been wanting a Stanwell pipe for a while since I've heard good things about them, and there were a few blends of tobacco on my list of next tobaccos to purchase. I was able to all that, and more, for under $100. Personally I'm very excited, but I'm definately done with buying anything else!

I bought a whack of SP gift cards, which qualify for their 10% deal. In effect, this allows you to double up on deals, because I can use the gift cards to purchase pipes or tobacco during future SP sales.

Smart thinking!

It does make sense. If, for example, they have a future deal where they give 10% off tobacco, then I will effectively have converted that 10% discount to an 18.2% discount by using the gift cards.

Absolutely does, I think you made the wisest decision with the promotion! I would do the same if I hadn't already spent my pipe budget this month with a bunch of different purchases!

Frankly, most of the online tobacconist's sales seem pretty lame in comparison to most online stores. They aren't going to draw me into shopping. As others mentioned, I would only care if I had something in particular that I was going to buy anyway.

Wives, especially, are prone to notice this and tell us to hold off for a spring sale. They know this stuff, man. It's magic, like how they understand the relationship between the colors in ties, shirts and shoes.
