everything bites me. everything. I have tried every darn method i could find to control the bite/burn irritation. smoked slow, smoked fast, dry, wet, gravity, frank, standing on my head, every kind of blend/leaf, planets aligned and prayers said and no method has reduced any of the after mouth effect.
It doesnt hurt anymore, but it doesnt feel good. Ive been piping for 2 years only getting 1 bowl a day. I would like to smoke more.
Cigars never effect me like this. I love piping, but man have i finally come to the point of just quitting.
I use ST37 to control the irritation, my hygene is impecable... what more can be done? Any advice you gents can suggest?

drfrank, what brands of pipes are you smoking?
Have you tried carbon filters? If I were you I would give a well made pipe in a carbon filter, such as Mastro De Pajas, or a Poul Winslow, a chance. Try a VaPer blend in it. I am not a huge latakia fan but an English might also be a candidate for your filter pipe. Most non aromatic tobacco smokes cooler for me. I use carbon or wood filters for some aromatic tobaccos.
If you are using a quality pipe, packing properly, and watching your cadence, that is all I can thank off. You might explore adjusting tobacco for your bodies PH or modifying that PH. Good luck.

tarak, Wessex BCDF is as bite free a flake as there it out there. What shape pipe and size pipe are you using? Are you drying the tobacco? How tight are you packing it? I am sad for you that this blend is biting you as for me it is my favorite.
I have a major issue with Red Virginia tobacco's. They burn my tongue in a big way. I am allergic to the reds in that I have an alkilinity problem. As soon as the smoke hits my tongue, I get an acid burn which really sucks because I love the flavor of the red's. Blends like McClellend 5100, Dark Star, St James Woods, Rattray Hal O The Wynd, Marlin Flake, GL Pease Haddo's Delight, Stokkebye LBF and probably another 100 other blends burn me badly. Some of you also may have the same alkilinity problen that I have. If a blend is biting you, check the ingredients to see of there are red's in it.
Perique, Anniversary Kake has a large ammount of red virginia's so that may be your issue with it.
drfrankenstein56, if everything is biting you then most likely you are puffing too fast, either drying the tobacco too much or not enough. Either packing too loose or too tight. Technique is key in the beginning so you need to really work on it. If you give me a list of the blends you are smoking, I might be able to help you figure it out. When I first began smoking a pipe after being a cigar guy a long time, I also had a lot of trouble in the beginning.
okiescout, I just began smoking the Vanilla Creme Flake and I am really enjoying it with no bite. What shape and size pipe are you using? How tight are you packing? It needs no drying as my tins have come at the perfect humidity.
In regards to Mac Baren Products, I smoke their ODF, Vanilla Creme Flake, Modern Virginia Flake and have no issues with bite. Therefore there are no red's in these so it may be your technique which is causing you problems. If there were any red's in them, I would know it the minute the smoke hit my tongue as I am that sensitive to them. It may be packing too loosely or smoking them too moist.

McBurnme here as well. I wont smoke anything from McBaren, just ruins my mouth.
Burley also does me dirt if it is at the forefront. I shy away from OTC's for this reason. Stonehven is one of my favorites but it doesnt bother me.
I have also had a few others along the way that didnt agree with my palate but I always chalked those up to bad form on my part.

CigarMaster,
Ive tried lots of blends, the list would be long. Im convinced its a PH thing, as the effects dont last and last like a burn but they are just uncomfortable. the feeling is much like if i had chewed the little cubes of glass you get when you break a car window.
Ive tried different pipes, peterson sytems, stanwells, butz, baracinni, 9mm filter, 6mm filter.
no luck. So far my best results have been a MM cob with the filter left out. Orlik GS is the only smoke that i can regularly enjoy without excessive mouth attack.
like i said, im convinced its a PH deal... whats the best way to alter ones PH?

McB's standard line up, Dunhill Flake and certain other straight VAs.

Cigarmaster, thank you for your interest. I respect your opinion very much.
My thoughts are it may be back to the PH thing. I have mostly quarter bents (consisting of a Dunn Hill, Poul Winslows, Mastro de Pajas, Savs , Petersons, Stanwells, Nordings, Nielsens, Charatans, Ardors, and about 1/2 dozen or so other makers. Most of them in medium to larger boles. I honestly cannot remember which ones I smoked it in as it has been at least a year or more ago. It was probably Mastro de pajas for the most part because I favor them and smoke them much more frequently in my rotations. They are primarily quarter bents with 3/4" diameter bored boles. When I first started smoking, my packing was a problem. Today I pack well enough that the blends which I enjoy, with the exception of pushing a VA occasionally, do not bite.
When an aromatic bites, and I have smoked aromatics primarily for years, I will let it air for a short time and try it again. Failing in this, I cellar and try it again 6 months or a year later. This can work wonders as guys who smoke aromatics frequently, and do this, are probably aware of. Some aromatics can generally be too wet as in the case of Molto Dolce, while some can come quite dried out (warehousing or shipping issues I am thinking).
While I enjoy some Mac VA and VaPer tobacco, I personally am not as big on their aromatics. Russ at H&H has many great aromatics along with, PS 6 Vanilla, Ole Shenandoah Barrel #76, CAO, Cult BRM, Scotty's, Lanes, Boswell's PA Dutch Treat , Raspberry Cream, and others are more than enough at this point. I will admit to a weakness for trying the latest new aromatic every now and then, but have concentrated on non aromatics primarily in order to build a cellar of these, that I like, as quickly as my smoking time and money allow.
My experience has been that any tobacco can come with a high or low moisture content depending on many things.I recently gained a good deal of experience in rehydrating and flavoring dried out leaf after receiving 8 lbs of terribly dried out bulk tobacco I ordered at discount. I have 20+ lbs of aromatics to burn through at this point and 98% of them I really like.

Generally my MO is to stay in for a pouch, after that if I still have problems with it I move on, just too damn many of them to worry too much over one :) I have a ton of great tobacco cellard and since starting on Va and VaPers a couple of years ago I just don't worry about it. Besides it is amazing what a little time in the bag will do for an aromatic. Sometimes not so much though. This may be one of those. Not everyone will agree with this and that is as it fine and normal.
Personally I am interested at this point in learning more about VAs and VaPer tobacco smoking mostly those and learning from you and some of the others that have spent years smoking them. As I have stated often, I have learned a great deal here on the forum and wish I had been aware of it and in communication with many of you when I started smoking years ago.
My thought on packing is, if done poorly you will have problems smoking about anything. I do love the Mastro de Paja pipes I have purchased and they all smoke everything I have put in them well... if I do my job right. Packing, cadence, etc. While I do not use filtered pipes on non aromatics these days, I find filters come in very handy on over top dressed (to me) aromatics ie: Molto Dolce, and it is not a problem to use them in the instances I choose to smoke one. I do not have a problem with ghosting on most aromatics as long as I limit the too guppy ones to a couple of Vaughns.

On the MacB issue - MacB themselves suggest packing a little more loosely. I smoke Golden Extra, Burley London,Mixture, Latakia, and The Solent without many issues. No issues at all with the HH blends I smoke.

I'd give the nod to Half and Half. But, as mentioned, it seemed to be my PH, and since then, I've become able to enjoy even this blend w/o burning sensations. Obviously, pack, puff and pace factor in. Well, it has become obvious as I've learned the 'ropes'. Heat and moisture make steam. Steam powers engines, or used to, and is a result one avoids, if possible, when smoking a pipe.

I'd be willing to bet that, if you can find it, no matter how you smoke it, Middleton's Apple will still bite like a pit bull with PMS. I started out smoking that, and thought having a sore mouth all the time was just part of the deal. Also, most peach blends I have ever smoked bit like a badger.
