No packing 'technique' is required if the tobacco is at the right moisture (flakes and plugs excepted; they require some actual technique).
Your burns/sore tongue are likely a direct result of too moist tobacco and the attendant excessive lights. And perhaps steam also due to that.
Very well said. I would add that hot steam and a burnt tongue can also be a result of puffing like a locomotive to keep excessively wet tobacco lit.

Maybe that's my problem, the tobaaco being to moist, not had tongue burn but do have to puff a bit harder to get it lit.

What's the best way to store it, with my rolling tobacco i keep it in the pouch so it's always moist, would an old coffee jar with a lid suffice or would it get too dry ?.

If you're talking about a 50g tin or pouch that you are likely to smoke within a month or two then the container it arrives in will suffice.
However, if you have bulk quantities or tobacco that you are likely to sit on for a while then dedicated glass jars are the way to go. I buy mine in Asda and they're cheap as chips, have a good silicone seal and bail clip fastener.

Jay.

How long have you been drying your tobacco?
It was hard for me to get it through my thick head to dry it long enough.
If you've not done so already, sit out a load of tobacco on a plate.
After 30 minute, visit it and compare the feeling of it to that still in the can or pouch.
Leave it there. Check again in another half hour. If it's not "tinder-like", check every 30 minutes until it is.
You can smoke it anywhere from pouch to tinder-like, with differing experiences. Air humidity will vary this further.
What may be terrible to you from the pouch may be awesome after X amount of time.
For packing, I push the first half only as hard as you would push on a marshmallow to make a dent. The second half, as if you were testing citrus for ripeness at the grocery.
Many combinations to explore. If you try all of the combinations of only 3 different pipes, 3 different dry times and 3 different packing levels, that's 27 unique combinations to test. Buy a bigger can of 'baccy!

@jaytex969,with smoking roll ups i assumed you needed moisture, your idea seems good but i will have to keep an eye on it. If my baccy got to dry when smoking roll ups i would throw it away, i still have a bit of roll up tobacco left incase the pipe isn't right. was looking for a tobacco that's more or less smokeable straight out of the tin, with the Condor and the few other blends i have it's all pretty moist. I have been smoking the pipe a bit then leaving it an hour or so and relighting it. Any suggestions for a tobacco thats smokeable straight away i would like to hear them because at the moment it's a minefield with all the varieties there is. Remembering that i am in the UK so alot of the baccy you smoke isn't readily available over here.

Thanks for the advice

I have found some Dunhill blends to be smokeable straight from the tin or with minimal air drying. At the other end of the spectrum you have Sam Gawith's blends which can be sopping wet on arrival.

Jay.

I have some Gawith but it's cherry, i would prefer a tobacco flavour. Any particular Dunhill Jay, someone did recommend the early morning mix i think it was.

Thx in advance

It's the "Attack of the Jays"...
I mentioned that GH&Co North Star in your other thread. There you will find a simple tobacco flavor in a fine shag that, if not ready from the container, will dry very quickly due to the cut.
Yes, moisture was very important to me with RYO, especially the Spirit, which dried quickly. I've had to disregard my RYO habits when judging pipe tobacco.
Not sure if Daughters & Ryan's US tobacco is sold over there, but they come VERY dry, also.
Maybe a field trip to the local tobacconist is in order where you can see and try a number of things in person.
Jay #1 can likely point you to a reputable B&M.

I don't smoke a lot, a bowl every day or two is my norm. So, I have learned to re-package all my tobacco ASAP. I take out of pouches or baggies (bulk buy, normally 2 ounces) and put them in the little canning jars. Those are perfect, IMO.

Also, learn how you like to smoke... wet or dry or... I have found that my preference is crispy dry. The air is dry here, so if I remember, I set out the tobacco on a little plate and let it air dry for several hours. Otherwise, I use the paper towel/microwave oven trick. Works for me. 10 seconds or so...
