One of the benefits of pipe smoking is stillness.

Here in southeastern PA, I share a property with several dozen bird varieties, according to the free Merlin Bird ID app. Today, as I sat quietly with an Upshall and a tin of Latakia, a House Finch fluttered to a nearby branch and eyed me for a few moments. He wasn’t bothered by the fragrant clouds and was content to remain for a while. (I don’t get that reaction indoors. Maybe with a Vanilla blend.) He eventually flew off, but I could hear him energetically chirping at other birds elsewhere in the garden until Lunabelle the Doodle came out for a run.

I enjoy moments like this.

He’s up there somewhere.
