Wire to unblock things, bird feathers for cleaning stems. That sounds about right but then most clays got tossed in the embers to clean or the pipe got discarded as they only cost a half penny or so at the time.

I'm sure many a pipe smoker of yore got yelled at by wife for cutting open pillows to get a few feathers.
