I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer the 10 gauge... 530gr is more than 3x the standard .308 bullet, takes alot to move that... Do you know what kind of velocity your load is getting?

Velocity with a 77 gr charge is about 1300 fps. You can get upward of around 1450 with that bullet. There's a lot of muzzle energy to be factored in to the equation as well. Something like 2000 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.

Man, what a bruise! I have an American Arms SxS 10ga. with 26in. barrels, and it's not that bad actually! That is unless you pull both triggers, which I have done several times! The gun also weighs over 12lbs. , so that does help. In your case, that is a beautiful rifle and it would be a shame to just hang it on the wall! The Limbsaver recoil pad you ordered is a good one! It should help. I know from experience that it makes a .300 Remington Ultra Magnum feel like a .30-06! Also, you might try loading some 300-350gr. lead in that thing. .45 Long Colt pistol bullets should work just fine. I have a buddy who used to have a Ruger no. 1 Tropical in .458 Win. Mag. He loaded it with 325gr. .45 LC and 405gr 45-70 Gvt. bullets with a charge comparable to a .45-90. That's what he deer hunted with! Hope this helps and good luck with the arm and the gun!

I've read good things about the LimbSaver and have it here but haven't tried it out yet...waiting on the shoulder to heal a little before I take it out again. I have another mold that throws a 480 gr bullet...a bit lighter than the 530 grain bullet. I don't know that the twist in the rifle would stabilize a 45 Colt bullet. It would have to be a slower twist, maybe a 1:22 as opposed to the 1:18 to be able to work with that lighter bullet. The lighter the bullet you need a slower twist than for heavier bullets.

Have the same rifle in 45-70. Not quite so much punishment,

and I have shot it long range for several years. Up to and

including 1000 yds with duplex loads. My rifle is made by Shiloh.

Used to belong to a favorite gun author of mine. Love the daylights

out of it. It hangs when not in use in my "Library" "Smoking Room".

By the way: try a 470 Nitro Express some time. I have a Double Gun

in that caliber. One does not go to the gun range mearly to plink

at a target with that one. The Double was made by Rigby. :puffpipe:

I am really surprised that the PAST pad was so ineffectual. I've shot .460 Weatherby and .458 Lott rifles wearing the PAST pad and they felt like shooting an extra loud .300 Win Mag. I hope you have better luck with the Limbsaver system or the Lead Sled.

No thanks. I've seen the cartridges before. Those doubles are a class act-Especially a Rigby or Holland and Holland.
I was disappointed in the pad I wore...a waste of money but I have high hopes for the LimbSaver. I really don't want to use the Lead Sled but it seems if I want to shoot this one it may be my salvation. Better doing that than watching this beauty collect dust hanging on the wall.
philobeddoe-Did you shoot those bruisers from the bench? Not me.

I thought I recognized that rifle sight from Quigley Down Under, although when he shot the weapon, he hardly moved!
Ah, the movies.
I was going to ask about a 'lighter load' but someone already mentioned it.
Having done some skeet shooting in Las Vegas with 12 guage, I can't even imagine the kick of that weapon.
Hope you heal soon
Allan

It will anyone, regardless the caliber or rifle. I could sand to fire my old .58 cal Zouave with 90 gr of black powder with no problem off hand. Sitting at the bench would have probably created some bruises akin to those I posted earlier. I can't hold a 11-12 pound rifle steady enough to try for groups.i wouldn't be able to hit a bull in the butt at 75 yards. That's why I was sitting at the bench with a better setup. Off hand I probably wouldn't have gotten the pretty colors on my arm and shoulder i did.

Thats a awesome gun! I enjoy shooting. I've got a .22 rifle. I live on 22 acres out in the country, so I don't have to drive to a range to shoot, I just walk out into my backyard. I'm out of ammo right now though

22 acres...now, that's what I need. Get up in the morning take my coffee and pipe out on the back porch and blast away, Oh yeah, that's the ticket!! If I did that here I'd be in the pokey before noon.
