I do a combination of matches and Zippo.
If I'm indoors, it's matches for the initial light and Zippo for any relights (yes, I relight, so sue me :nana: )
If I'm outdoors it's Zippo all the way, mostly because I burn myself with a Bic or matches

I used matches when I started with the pipe, I felt pretty classy at the time. Eventually I got myself a Kiribi Kabuto and use that the majority of the time (while looking super classy :) Until it broke...

While it is in transit back to smokingpipes.com for a replacement, I have been using a Bic. It certainly gets the job done but, I feel I don't have much control over the flame and that is frustrating.

I avoid BIC, I get burned my fingers all the time. If I have to use a lighter I use one with 90' flame adapted for pipe. But I prefer matches which I always use for initial lighting. Problem is when outside as I don't like Zippo for the smell and matches/butane lighters are pretty useless if there is any breeze (yes you can find a wall to cover but not always you have one available). Interestingly I discovered a decent way for outside relighting using a plasma lighter to burn an hemp wick. Plasma lighers are great as they are not affected by any wind and tick hemp wick hold the breeze better than the matches/butane lighter.

Wooden matches. Inexpensive, easy to handle and carry; but you've got to be a bit of a wind-ninja around here to manage the great, breezy outdoors. Thankfully my dad taught me all the hand and finger angles for match battles against the local winds, so most of the time I've got the know-how for blocking the BC winds. Now key the old song 'Windy', "Who's creeping out from under the staircase...."

I have a few butane lighters, including an old boy etc, but find myself leaning towards matches if I'm sat at home, but to be honest the preference isn't due to function, more to do with the feel/nostalgia of lighting up the way my heroes like Bing Crosby did...

Matches. Every time I go to the 21 Club I stuff my pockets with their matches which are the long cigar variety. The same apples to any restaurant that has bowls of wooden matches - I just whip the lot. I also use Swann Vesta strike anywhere matches and other peoples BIC lighters that I am an expert at borrowing and not returning!

Holy cow! I am lucky to have gotten away from Simon with my Old Boy still in possession!
Excellent point. Amended:
Hover the flame and pull it [in]to the tobacco.
Disagree. You don't want the flame in the tobacco. You want the tip of the flame above the tobacco. Plenty hot enough for a cool-side ignition.
