What resources do you use to verify if an aged tin of blank pipe tobacco is being sold at a reasonable price? Search this site for older sales?
Thanks in advance.

My own personal experience, what I'm willing to pay.

There is no set price on a lot of stuff. Prices vary wildly from day to day, and who has the cash and desire to pay whatever the asking price is. It's not like there's a Scott's Catalog, or Blue Book of tobacco prices.

Tobacco sales on this site are usually removed after the sale is completed, or at least until recently they were.

I agree with craig. It's a supply and demand thing. People usually sell a tin for whatever other people are willing to pay for it. A lot depends on the blend, how long it's been aged, and the condition of the tin. Most people are pretty fare on here, and Steve at Pipestuds certainly knows his stuff.

For discontinued and rare blends, a specialist site like pipestud is useful. For widely distributed current blends, scouting around three or more sites that are dependable, like our sponsors, should get you in the right ballpark. Watch for sales.

I’m with Craig61a on this one. It’s worth what you’re willing to pay. You can certainly price check against other sources but that’s only relevant to show what other people are willing to pay at best. Remembering of course that asking price and getting price can be worlds apart….

Setting aside the debatable concept of "reasonable price" in a not yet mature market, there are two good sources for pricing that appear to work on different principles. Pipestud's site works on the principle of the highest price for immediate sale, and 4 noggins would be highest price for eventual sale. Both offer consigned tins of vintage tobaccos for sale. With Pipestud's site the feeding frenzy is over in a few minutes, seconds really with the starfucker blends. At 4noggins consigned tins may be around for months, but eventually they sell.

Pipestud has developed a "Brand" and a following over the years, along with reputation.

While he does set the price to a certain degree, that doesn't necessarily translate to other people hawking "Vintage" tobacco elsewhere.

I think the answer to this is if you’re married or not. Spouses make great price-o-meters. Their reactions will clearly tell you whether it’s reasonable.
It took some convincing for my gf to let me snag some 2008 Christmas cheer for $85. That’s like a purse to her! She’s not into the hobby and cannot understand why i’d spend so much on 100 grams of tobacco. I’ll tell you now — it was well worth it! Just lit up my first bowl today

Tobacco is dirty cheap. A bill will get you a bunch of of good stuff. Pipes are cheaper than they'll ever be too!!! :D
