I started smoking a pipe for the practicality of the thing. I wanted nicotine, not paper.

I had been rolling my own cigs for years, and had quit them many times, but nicotine had made its dent in the recesses of my brain and I would always return in times of stress.

I started using what I had on hand, OHM Bold. I inhaled at first.

As for the codger blends, I learned that one's palate requires awakening to new and different burley based blends, and that virtually all of them can deliver the goods if you take the time to get to know them.

I now buy bulk blends rather than tubs and tins, for the most part. C&D, McLelland's, and D&R provide me variety and value.

Walnut has been discontinued but I just picked up "chestnut" from p&c which is supposed to be a recreation of Walnut. I've never had Walnut so I will be basing my opinion solely on the recreation when I open it. I also grabbed a tub of Sweet Cask which is the recreation of the now discontinued Sugar Barrel OTC blend

I like PA, CH, Lane Limited Ready-Rubbed, and Classic Burley Kake. Those four are enough to satisfy my codger burley needs, which, ironically, are increasing with age. ??? Oh, well, I'm just going with it. I recently posted a thread titled something like, "Half & Half is not as bad as I remember", meaning it's better, but still is nowhere near a go-to for me.

I like PC Home and Hearth Midtown non-aromatic Chestnut, a Russ O. match to discontinued Walnut, that comes in pouch or tub.

Don't forget about Velvet!!! On a whim, I tried it, and now it is in my top 3. Great OTC blend that I will not go without. Half way thru the tin with another tin on the way to cellar. Second choice otc: Carter Hall. Third choice otc: Half & Half. But, do yourself a favor and try Velvet. There is also an interesting youtube feature about the history of the tobacco which I found very interesting.

I can't add much to this databank of knowledge, but Granger is good, so is Half and Half and Sir Walter Raleigh regular.
If you want to try an really old and venerated OTC, give C&D's Epiphany a shot. It is as close to Revelation, Einstein's go-to blend, as anything you'll find in the match world of tobaccos of yesteryear.
Also, C&D has some really good burley blends if you are just hankering for burley.

I am a huge fan of Sir Walter Raleigh. Prine Albert is probably my second favorite and Paladin Black Cherry isn't to terribly bad :puffy:
