She left me for Jesus and that just ain't fair
She says that He's perfect, how could I compare?
She says I should find Him and I'll know peace at last
If I ever find Jesus, I'm kicking His ass

Saw your old lady in the park today
The legendary smile is wearing thin
Behind that guessing game you make her play
Now that she knows that she could never win
I guess you're never gonna take her down
Down to the bottom of your little black heart
Lay with her naked on the cool hard ground

When they hung him on a Friday
Neath the gray Wyoming sky
All the lawyers down at the Cheyenne Club
Were smoking cigars and drinkin' Rye

Been riding hard for three days
But I can't turn back now
They sentenced me to hang
But I slipped away somehow
Hell I'm the best there is
And that's all you need to know
I got Outlaw blood
And a restless weary soul

Well, my sense of humanity has gone down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet but it's gettin' there

Well I met her on the street where she beat me like a fool
Then she got me accepted to an ivy league school
Well I real did good but it's kickin' my ass
I lost 38 pounds and my eye turned to glass

Now tell me again just where you been
This past Sunday night
When you came in you smelled like Gin
And you weren't talking right

I'm gonna tell ya one more time
This time I'll be blunt
Believe me when I tell ya darling
That dog won't hunt

Well my baby threw me out because I drink too much
She offered me her car so I could move my stuff
I'm gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

I used to participate in a forum for songwriters & one section was for discussing lyric interpretations. Among the lyrics frequently discussed was the 1967 Procol Harum song, A Whiter Shade of Pale. Like most classic songs the writer is on record as saying the lyrics came to him quickly like a download, & that they are not about alcohol, drugs, overdose & death. Most refused to believe it:

The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
