Sonny, if you want to get the real Lakeland Experience, you've got to go with Samuel Gwaith's 1792 Flake and Gawith, Hogarth, &Co Ennerdale. Grab those two and you are well on the way to the full Lakeland Experience.

That pretty much sums it up right there, though I do have to throw in another vote for Grousemoor and one for Bosun Cut Plug as well.

Rich Dark Honeydew is the Lakeland-i-est of them all IMO. It's ribbon... You can find it in bulk at Just 4 Him and Mars Pipes and Cigars and?
Ennerdale is easier to find... weaker, yet unmistakably a lakeland.
Grousemoor is good, but you won't be able to say you've tried a lakeland. It's not like RDH or Ennerdale. There's not enough spice and incense... (or grandma's perfume).
Get RDH.
***I am assuming that by Lakeland, you mean that unmistakable and polarizing perfume flavoring. I happen to love it. I insist that Rich Dark Honeydew takes the cake in this Dept.
Ennerdale, Bob's and Peretti's original also have the "unmistakable and polarizing" flavoring.

Funny how often I've seen mention of that Honeydew come up--- ordinarily, honeydew doesn't sound like anything I'd want to smoke but now I've seen several people go out of their way to mention it!

toobfreak, it's true, my sampling of blends is glacial (i.e. very gradual) but I do hit some rare blends. I tried Tambolaka before it disappeared from 4Noggins, and have smoked some Haitian air cured burley and so forth, so I'm not just hugging a tub of codger OTC. But I'll definitely sample the Lakeland, no doubt.

Sweet! I know there are a million blends out there that people rave about that I just don't rush to try because I already have enough that I know I like that I have enough trouble keeping all in stock! But I tried Lakelands a while back and they certainly are different. Aro yes, but in a different way, a real punch in the face flavor but with good STOUT tobacco.
I just smoke it in the same pipes as other aros.
I've found Bob's Chocolate Flake to be a pleasant entry to the field. I tried several chocolate blends wondering what chocolate was doing with tobacco. Some of them are real bad, but Bob's does not even taste chocolatey to me, just kinda tasty and different.
If you want a little stronger, "true" Lakeland, I find Conniston Cut Plug to always be a delight, with a nice quality broken flake, enjoyable flavor and aroma that stands far out from ordinary blends. Hours later I find myself smacking my lips with a Hmmmm!

Let's get some consensus. I thought "Lakeland" tobaccos all shared that unique, soapy, perfume flavor.
I see people suggesting tobaccos that do not have this flavoring.
The "Soapiest" tobaccos I've tried were all G+H tobaccos. Rich Dark Honeydew being the most. Then Ennerdale. Then Bob's Chocolate Flake. I tried some of the others, but did not get that soapy, perfumey flavor.
Peretti's Original is the only other I tried that has it that wasn't a G+H tobacco.
So, can a tobacco be a lakeland without that soapy, floral, perfumey flavor?

Ahh! Rich, Dark Honeydew!

Serious, yes, Lakelands vary far and wide, some smelling like the perfume counter, others much less so.

I can't give you consensus but I can give you facts: Lakeland means made by Sam Gawith or Gawith Hoggarth in the Lake District. FVF is a Lakeland just as much as Ennerdale. Condor isn't though.

@lasttango -- Some people use the term to refer to the district of origin, while others use it to refer to the floral qualities that you mention (though not everyone appears to get the soap thing). So, consensus on the issue is impossible.

Funny how we all experience these things so differently. I would say I hardly get any florals from RDH but you think it's the most extreme of the bunch, weird. I think Grousemoor is highly floral and a great example of the Lakeland genre.

I've found that Ennerdale out of a tin is way better than bulk, the strength of a Lakeland seems to have a lot to do with how fresh it is.
Grousemoor is the only blend I've had that I actually struggled to finish a bowl.

The first half of a fresh bowl out of a new tin of Ennerdale comes close, but I think Ennerdale eventually calms down into something quite enjoyable.

I have only smoked Best Brown #2 which was a pleasant "lakeland flavor/essence" experience. When I move back to the U.S. I plan on sampling more GH tobaccos. This thread has already helped me decide which ones will be included in my first order.

As far as Lakekands by product location, I have had plenty to knkw that SG has a lot of great tobaccos for a descent price.

For a few years, folks here have been saying that Peterson's Hyde Park fits this category. I just finished my first bowl of it and I would agree that to a certain extent it does. The tin aroma is deceptive. My nose detected no floral or perfumey scent. It got more plum, sugar and rum... Upon lighting it and smoking through an entire bowl I would say that if you don't like Ennerdale or similar tobaccos, you'd likely not enjoy this. Hyde Park also has an above average NIC hit. This might make sense because G+H are/were the blenders of it. If it's changed, I am not clear on that.

In any case, I am glad I finally tried it.
