Opinions may definitely differ, but I use a simple Uncle Mike's with a clip for appendix carry inside my waistband. I carry. Sig P238, and it is reasonably comfortable. Also, I have a Kydex holster that a friend custom made for me - had to borrow my gun for a couple days. It is great for concealing the profile in cargo pockets and has a point that catches the pocket for easy draw. The balance between accessibility, weapon retention and comfort is very subjective.
Peace,

Bill

I carry everyday, have for over 25 years, sometime without a belt or with shorts, the best option is a paddle holster, the Galco holsters I have never disappoint, look at the options, and dont buy cheap, a good quality leather holster will run $60 and up, not including sale price

Others have said it, but you'll most likely end up with a variation of belts/holsters and non-belt options.
Some non-belt (but includes some form of band) are the Crossbreed Belly Band and the Brave Response holsters. Brave Response claims that you can conceal in running shorts and a t-shirt with their rig and not lose equipment or compromise conceal.
Weather plays a role since your dress changes to match seasons so you'll want access a variety of ways.
Choice of weapon makes a difference as well; you may find yourself changing weapons depending on the carry need.
Bottom line, like a lot of us you have to experiment with what you think works best.

Not too long ago, I found this: "DeSantis Super Fly Pocket Holster Ambidextrous S&W J-Frame, Bodyguard 38 Nylon Black".
It is simply a "pocket holster". And I have been thrilled with it. I'm a large person so my pockets all can easily accommodate this... and in everything from summer shorts to winter formal wear. I am not familiar with the XD9, but I do have a Springfield XDm in 9mm with double stack magazines... that is generally much too large to carry light-duty "informally" around here. Hence I have a small lightweight S&W revolver for that. The pocket holster was a god-send for that.
