The only thing I dislike about my two Rossi pipes is the strange taste their stems have developed - reminds me of ice cream sticks or something like that. Does anyone know what might cause that?

I have a modern Dr Grabow. I think I paid $42 for it. Great smoker. Very light. Small bowl size but that’s a plus for me. Some dislike the abs plastic stem/aluminum tenon, but I like it. The plastic requires no maintenance but light cleaning. It’s fairly soft and good for clenching. The aluminum tenon makes it easy to take apart for cleaning.
That tenon is hard to clean. That aluminum is a tar magnet.

Have you cleaned it lately?

Warm tap water, bristle pipe cleaner, unscented dish soap and scrub the stem really good.

Take a different bristle cleaner soaked in iso alcohol 91%. Stick it in that air way and slowly rotate and run it in and out. Leave it 10minutes. Come back and use a dry one and see how each pipe cleaner looks.

What have you been smoking? I find that some Virginia blends leave my pipes smelling like a sawmill.

I’ve been eyeing the Ropp Vintage line. Old briar, horn stems & for less than a bill? What’s not to love? +1 for Rossi. If you’re not adverse to estates, you can usually find Algerian briar pipes for a song. Sometimes even unsmoked ones.

Blakemar briars , English pipe maker are very reasonable and great pipes.
I new a fellow who smoked princealbert in a Castello. But smoked his gawith rope in a grabow.

Price is subjective for most things.

Yikes! When I started pipe smoking back in the ‘70’s, Grabows sold for under $5.
