Nobody but my self and my own proclivities. I'd probably blame my first piano teacher for my partiality towards nicotine and tobacco. (May she RIP.)
I guarantee you, second hand smoke can lead to a first hand addiction. If I had never been regularly and directly exposed to tobacco smoke as a young child, I might have resisted the later peer pressure to try cigarettes; at which point I already knew I liked tobacco smoke.Nicotine is a powerful psychoactive drug, though it's effects are subtle, and insidious. It's also good for the brain in certain ways, and can stimulate creativity.
Logic led me to pipes, in that I was always at odds with smoking cigarettes, though I wanted to enjoy the benefits of nicotine.
I was also investigating indigenous spirituality at the time, and burning sacred herbs in my home. I hadn't smoked any tobacco in a decade, but I was reminded of it, as I was investigating and practicing certain spiritual practices. I often burned sweetgrass, cedar, and sage from my garden, as a cleansing ritual within the home. Tobacco was the missing herb, and I really first bought a pipe for that reason.
