Hello, New Member here. I've been smoking a pipe for about 3 yrs. In the past year I have started exploring English blends.

I pretty much buy whatever the local smoke shops have in stock. Until recently it's been Peterson Standard Mixture and Consummate Gentleman. They have a campfire smell and taste but I like them well enough.

Last week I picked up several tins of Black House and also Bengal Slices with the black and the white labels.

Black House is very good, more complex with different flavors. Like it a lot.

Bengal Slices with the black label though was nirvana. Haven't opened the white label one yet. Rich smokiness with a totally different taste than the others I've tried. BBQ, leathery, spicy with a toned down campfire taste. Unfortunately I just found out it has been discontinued.

Looking for suggestions on alternatives. Thanks.

Bengal Slices was my first love. The topping of anise was well applied and the flavors melded so well throughout the whole bowl. Also the look and feel of the slices was unmatched. One alternative that is harder to find now, but hopefully will be more available soon with C&D taking over production, is Seattle Pipe Club’s Plum Pudding. You might also consider a blend from Captain’s Earl’s such as Mystic or Reflection.

Latakia blends are a tricky thing for me. Depending on the amount of Latakia, they can be tough to distinguish other flavors.
Every now and then you find a blend, or brand that does it right.
For me, C&D, including GLP make great Latakia blends. My personal favorites are C&D Star of the East for a stout Latakia blend, C&D Epiphany for a lighter Latakia hit.
Rattrays has some good blends. Red Rapparee and Black Malory are great.
GLP has too many good ones to name. Greg has a fondness for Latakia, so he works hard on them. Meridian, Gaslight, Abingdon are my personal favorites. In my opinion Abingdon might be the perfect Latakia blend.

With all the suggestions I guess it is time to put together a smokingpipes wishlist. Never ordered tobacco online before because the local choices seemed decent for someone just starting and not knowing what they really like. Seeing a whole new world of options online.

English blends are outdoor only for me. Everything else is wife approved for indoors. Warm weather is fine smoking outdoors but late Fall to early Spring can be windy and cold here in northern Pa. Those days I am in my spare garage i.e. The Cat Motel. Living in a rural area people seem to think it's ok to just drop off unwanted cats. I set up the garage with straw beds, food/water bowls and some heating pads. Amazing how friendly a stray or feral cat can become when someone shows them some kindness. Plus they don't mind the campfire smell.

Perfection by SG is a standard English with a vanilla topping.
