Regardless of flame source's temperature, you regulate the temp at the contact point by holding it further (or closer)to the tobacco. Torch lighters can be used just fine, but not recommended unless you're really paying attention!

'Several nice lighters, but I really like the soft flame of a match. Outdoors is more of a challenge, but I like the sport of finding a berm, tree, or light pole to shield from the wind.
