Being Petersonised

I have 16 pipes and two of them are Petes. I have a Fermoy B10 and a Arklow 150.

I've only been smoking pipes for 7 months, so in the interest of keeping the peace at home I decided to cool it with pipe purchases. BUT I constantly find myself looking at Petersons and basically find every shape attractive. I told myself that I would get a P-Lip spigot 105 and then I'll be done! Then I saw the copper spigot fishtail on the Christmas pipes and I'm all twisted up again!

I've got the same problem (or is this really a problem?). I always find myself looking at Peterson and Rattray's pipes, and I'm never ever done. A few hours ago, I just checked Peterson St. Patrick's Day pipe.

I’ve acquired a few but haven’t warmed to them yet. Not a fan of their rusticating or P-Lip . I’m also on the fence regarding the effectiveness of their ’system’ feature. I do like their army mounts though.

I have been a fan of Peterson Pipes and the P-lip for over 50 years.
My collection of Petes is up to 35 and still growing.
Currently I have my eye on a Sherlock Holmes Junior on SP.

I have about twenty or so and really love the chonky size of them. Usually get a decently long smoke out of them, too. My fave shapes are the XL14 (Deerstalker) and the B42, but I have a fairly decent smattering of styles (most recently getting the POTY and the D17 Xmas pipe). I've had zero bad luck with my Pete's and would have no problem only smoking/collecting Peterson pipes.

I smoke 4 times daily, always a different pipe each time. So, I have a 28 pipe weekly rotation and 25 of them are Petes. Particularly fond of Sherlock Holmes pipes and have 9 of them. Next most prevalent series of my Petes is the deluxe system line as I have 4 of them.

Then I found a Peterson Kapp-Royal at a junktique shop for $30. It has a stem stamped IRC which made it a store pipe from Iwan Ries. I restored it and enjoyed smoking it. Ironically, even though it is stamped Kapp-Royal, it has the bead work on the stummel that was used on the Peterson Dunmore line.

Next thing I know, my late wife bought me a Peterson Fermoy for my birthday and a Sherlock Holmes Original for Christmas.

I missed out on Father's Day this year and we held her memorial service on our anniversary in August. So I bought my self a Peterson System 303 at our September pipe club meeting.

The Laudisi rep was at the New Orleans Club meeting. He had about 50 Peterson's on display, mostly mid-grades. I handled several and was impressed with the drilling and stemwork.

It took me about 5-6 years of pipe smoking to come around to Petersons. One of my early pipe purchases was a low grade Pete, with acrylic P-lip stem. Later, I learned that I was a vulcanite guy and picked up some pre-Republic Petes to restore. I loved them and that set the hook.

Ive none either. Any time I see a new one I would like to have its at a price point where I could buy something I like better as an estate. Some of my Kai pipes were less than a nice new Pete. Im sure they are great pipes but I guess I have not quite yet been bitten by the Irish mosquito. It will probably happen eventually.

Ahaha, the Irish Mosquito. That should be a part of their advertising!

I feel like I am slowly becoming Petersonised. I think a Peterson will be my next pipe in the near future.

Though I’ve never smoked one, the system is very attractive intellectually, and I have high hopes it actually delivers on its promise. I’ve read many conflicting accounts.

The POTY 2024 is particularly handsome, BUT I’m still trying to understand/stomach the wear gap. It seems technically unnecessary and aesthetically sloppy.

Perhaps it’s an acquired taste, and I’ll eventually like it

I like the pub pipes, deluxe system, plain old system, and the Sherlock Holmes series'. One thing about the Pete system pipes -- you must keep them clean for them to work correctly. Like Douglas, above, I am not a fan of the rustication; seems like a cover-up to me. Also, I like to find old Petes I can buy low and restore. Probably 85% of my pipes are Peterson's... Truth be told, even though I have some expensive artisan pipes, and a couple pipes from other factories, I find myself smoking Peterson's most often. In fact, I smoke one single Peterson at least twice daily.

This happened to me. I was a pretty devout Vauen follower in the beginning. I picked up an Ebony 107 back when they still had the flaired saddle stems, to this day it's my favorite pipe. Since then I buy at least one 107 every Christmas and have bought a smattering of others as well. Hell I've even come around to the P-Lip.

I have other brands and I really like them. I can acknowledge my Savinelli's great drilling and clean lines. I love my Ropp's unique shapes and stems. But I never lust after other pipes like I do Petes.

affinity for Peterson pipes.

Yes, I have six pipes. Two Petersons, and those are the only two I smoke. I like the system pipe for the fact that the moisture well does exactly what is supposed to do, and I can smoke the whole bowl with no gurgling whatsoever. Also, easy maintenance due to the army mount, so it can be taken apart and cleaned without a cooling off period. I like the p-lip with the bent stem for the way it hangs so easily, and I like the way it touches the tongue and fits just right. Just good pipes in general.

I'm really falling in love with my new smooth 314 system. I've smoked roughly 40 bowls in it, in about a week or so. I'm looking at a sandblasted one now, but I have 2 new meers on the way.

Hard not to pull the trigger. My 314 really smokes better than most of my pipes. I'm kinda shocked.

I'm curious to know if any of you share this affinity for Peterson pipes.

90 Petersons, about 75 of them in rotation, the leftovers are spare or waiting in queue to break up. I have no other pipes. Still addicted to buy some more.

Twelve or so years ago I bought a few Peterson pipes and all of them gurgled or whistled up a storm and it turned me off of them. I also didn't really like the P-lip. Then last year I gave them another chance because I heard that the new owners had made a big difference. I just realized today when I did some cleaning that I have 15 Petersons and I'm waiting on one more that is in the mail. I always thought I was a Stanwell collector but it appears I'm just as much a Peterson collector now. All of these new ones smoke perfectly and I'm a big fan of the Peterson aesthetic and now I've gotten used to and really like the P-lip.

So yes, I think it has happened to me too.
