I am a beginner in smoking pipes, I want to ask if I completely exhausted the pipe bowl, do I empty the ash when I get to the middle or when it finishes completely?
ThanksI do keep the ashes until the end of the bowl. During the smoke you will need to tamper the ash lightly to keep it lit and also to make it easier to relit.
ThanksNo set practice. When outside, esp if it's windy, I'll flick the ash out before the wind does it. Inside, I tamp and light right through the small layer of ash.
ThanksIf I find it's hard to re light, or needs multiple relights due to too much ash, I'll dump the excess, and re light.
Otherwise I leave it.

I usually dump about 2/3 in. This gives me a pause to see if I should run a pipe cleaner to dry up the pipe. Usually don't need to dry up the pipe, but I do it anyway. I like to fiddle with my pipes.

Agree. And it also depends on tobacco and how ash is.There is no wrong way, no right way. If you find something that works for you, do it.
We have all done that at some point ...... only the other day I got a nice little ember in my mouth, lol.Oh, yeah, and drawing hard on heel ash when there's nothing else is likely to bring a gust of very hot air along with the ash.
