So about 4 or 5 months back I was at a local tobacconist here in New Orleans when I decided to splurge and buy myself a new pipe. When I buy a new pipe (as in not refurbished or otherwise used) I have a strange solemnity about me. I always want each "new" pipe to be of some significance. This time I decided to buy a meerschaum pipe. Now, I already have one that I bought brand new from a carver in Turkey via E-bay, but I wanted a big bowl and something with some kind of designs, not just plain.
As I peered through the glass at the offerings, I found myself drawn to CAO meerschaum. After questioning myself, my God, and the two ladies who worked there for over an hour and a half as to which (I was torn amongst three) was best, I made my decision. This pipe was carved by Ismet Bekler. Besides smoking it, I immediately googled Mr. Bekler as well as CAO and their reputation in meerschaum to further investigate what I just bought. From what I can see, unsmoked Bekler pipes are rare and hard to find. Bekler was/is a master meerschaum carver-good enough to carve his autograph into his pipes. This is what I was able to draw off of forums. Do you guys know anything else about him? CAO meerschaum? They had about 5 other Bekler/CAO pipes there. I may have to go back soon if they're a hot commodity... I took the liberty of posting some pictures for y'all. Any general meerschaum tips for me would also be appreciated. I haven't had one with this much detail in the carvings, and I'm curious about upkeep...

I don't know from meerschaum, andrew, but that's a beautiful pipe. Love the classic billiard shape and hint of a bend in the stem. You've given her a lot of color in just a few months--must be all that Perique?

Thanks guys! I do smoke a lot of Perique! I've been really badly wanting to go to Saint James Parish Louisiana where Perique is from. I just don't have a car or the money (I'm a college student). Right now I've got some Peterson's Sweet Kilarney in her. This has come to be my favorite of a collection of around 10 pipes.

I like the pipe, good purchase. I watched the Christmas Eve bonfires on the Mississippi River levee in St. James Parish last year. I'm not sure how far the tobacco farm is from there but I would also like to visit sometime when I am in the area. Maybe PaPa Noel will guide me there next Christmas. :)

This thread has become a very "fun" read ..... with all the pipe info plus the cultural references to PaPa Noel, the levees and St. James Parish... :D

I have 2 Meerschaums carved and signed by Mr Bekler, one very similar to yours, and one smooth. Both are considered high quality meers, and do smoke great for me. Meers are somewhat of a new passion for me, and it looks like many others are being drawn into their mystique and beauty, not to take away from their smoking qualities. Anyway, I hope Fred will chime in and give more insight, good man to help. Take care and enjoy, nice pipe!

Nice Pipe. I'm really a student of these Pipes, and don't consider myself

an expert as there is still much to learn. I have 5 Bekler Meerschaums and

enjoy them frequently. I've stayed away from his Figurals, preferring the more

standard shapes. At the time, Bekler was regarded as the best Carver, which

I believe is an artifact of the relationship between CAO and Tinderbox, so he

got a lot of press. During the same period, the Koncaks, the Yaniks, Baki

and others were producing high grade Pipes. Other brands such as Altinay were

big in the European market. Pioneer was big in both the US and the UK. Yes,

Ismet Bekler was part of the movement into modern Meerschaums, but he was not

the only Carver of excellence around, as CAO would have us believe.

Your new Meerschaum should give you years of pleasure. I know that mine have

been really good smokers.
