Congratz!
I agree with what Phillip said. Some of my fondest memories are of being with my dad and my Gram (his mom), both cig smokers and Pappa Jim, the classic hard working old codger, who I can't remember seeing w/out a pipe. Be smart, ignore the Orwellian hype and you and your kids will be fine. Best of luck and God bless you and yours!

I will not smoke around the daughter in a closed area. I only smoke indoors in my "man-cave" anyway, and only when the weather is bad (otherwise I love having another excuse to go outside) but I don't think the baby will be there often.
I suppose I will carry on and let the scent be another way for her to recognize me.
You beat me to it.
I have 2 daughters and I smoke on the deck in summer, and in winter I smoke in my "man-cave" (aka the basement) or aros in the house after they've gone to bed. Alls good.
Anyway - wishing you a big congratulations - you're life will never be the same (and it will never be better).

Let me add my congratulations and second some of the sage advice that has already been offered. My two kids are now in their thirties and seem to have suffered no ill effects from my pipe smoking. Neither of them smoke, so I won't light up when I visit their homes, but they know Dad will be puffing away when they visit me.
Medical professionals are quite willing to repeat the current predjudice against smoking without doing any research of their own or appreciating the difference between pipes and cigarettes. It's probably worth pointing out that the largest study ever done on ETS (second hand smoke) by the World Health Organization found no connection between exposure to tobacco smoke and disease.
The best thing you can do for your little one will be to love her Mom. Do that and the rest will take care of itself. Oh, it's alright to get a little choked up when your little girl gives you a big hug!

I know that the claims about second hand smoke are all sketchy and it's a toss up, but I'm not risking it. I have no reason to. I'll just smoke in my mancave and outside, where I like to smoke best anyway. I was more concerned about the little one being disgusted by the smell on my beard and clothes.
I had a feeling that the medical personell we have talked to were (like always) lumping in all kinds of smoking together with their statements. I don't blame kids for disliking cig smoke. :|

I used to blow smoke bubbles for my nephews and daughter. You just blow the soap bubbles with smoke and not air. They have a cool swirly look to them and they sink and bounce instead of float. When they finally pop, the smoke puffs out. Kids think it's cool.
