Had the most awesome pipe voyage. Went out for a walk..new to pipe smoking but have a large collection of pipes grebows, mastercrafts kaywoodies etc.
Took out a small bowl grebow straight stem Van Roy and packed it with P.A set off for a stroll nice day! Perfect smoke... excellent packing...it was just perfect. After a while an old man was sitting on bench as I was strolling by he saw me smoking my pipe and called out to me, said it was rare to see someone still smoking a pipe. He liked the smell asked me to join him. I only needed one relite was puffing away and he told me the scent reminded me of his grand father..this man was in his 90's...you could see the gleem in his eyes as the smoke brought back memories of his youth telling me sitting on his grandfathers floor playing with a wooden truck, while his grandpa read the paper and smoked his pipe. Amazing how a pipe and scent can trigger so many memories. He asked if he could see my pipe, I handed it over to him , he closed his eyes was slowly rubbing the bowl and stem with his thumb and fingers, all the while smiling. He thanked me for bringing back good memories to him. .it's the first time that I've smoked a bow to fine white ash .I left him a small pouch of P.A to honor the memory of his grandpa....it's the little things in life that bring so much Joy to someone .Peace and happiness to all.

Great story, I've had those moments as well, its a good reminder why we started this in the first place :)
Just to think it stated with collecting pipes...I have an antique tabacco collection that I started also. An un-oppened tin of 23 cent prince Albert, an unopened tin of Briggs pipe tabacco, and my 2 best pieces a 1920's sealed tin of Buckingham tabacco..my grandparents used to smoke that brand ( according. To my father it hasn't been made since 1955) might take it to blatter& blatter in Montreal to have it released into the wild again and relive....I'm just the caretaker of it for now

The olfactory system, the sense of smell, is supposed to have the strongest power of evoking memories, along with the sense of taste, which depends a lot on smell for its nuances.

Pipe smokers have the advantage that pipe tobacco in general has a more inviting fragrance than either cigarettes or cigars. Cigarettes are associated with a lot of stale ash and overbearing smoke, and the room note on cigars tends to be too strong and too persistent.

I have mixed emotions about reminding people of their grandparents, especially if they are a decade or more older than I, but I guess we could do worse than serve as a historical remembrance.

I've never gotten the "grandfather" reaction, but after all the posts on Forums, I'm ready for it.
