Very accurate description.. that's about what it felt like.
The good news for me is that I quickly cycled the funds to Turkey for a new Meer.

Hmmm. As peck asked, what do we think happened here? So far, it has been mentioned that it was a sort of terrarium effect, with the flake packed with some moisture, air and apparently spores. Then there's the hot and maybe moist storage effect that has been considered. I would add, just for a hypothesis, that though Mylar is an excellent tobacco storage bag material, it could have been compromised, even a pinhole, over time, that let in enough moisture and or spores to get things going and keep them going.

Imo, the flakes were sealed too wet. Every pound and 250g box I've ever purchased, I've opened to examine the flakes.

If they felt too wet to the touch, I would lay them out to dry for a few hours before jarring. Lost only a couple jars due to that funk that BluegrassBrian experienced, and that was due to my own incompetence, putting them up way too wet.
