Mike Thompson: I hope I was such a brave man as you are,but tell you what,I'm still wondering today when our mail folks at sorting facility they doing job for our customs authorities, inspecting visually each and every parcel coming from the States or Canada, just in case if the total declared value on the customs dispatch indicating value of contents more that $35 then it automatically goes into declaring process. No matter what are the contents of it, biscuits or peanutbutter,or clothing or tobacco(the worst scenario)

You see, they now doing job for the customs and sending notifications to receivers,in my opinion Tax and revenue dept.is in desperate need of additional funds in form of added sales taxes >meaning prior they release the parcel you are to pay added %24 of total merchandise value, and should they discover tobacco product in the package, then its the receiver to proof that the sender was not registred business seller and if it became obvious than the sender was anything else but privat person, all the stuff is due to confiscation or sending back,in this event no tax nor paid duty would release the parcel from sorting facility. So much for cellaring on cheap, Greets, Paul

I’m in northern Ontario Canada. I have to drive 1.5 hours just to find a store that sells maybe 2 OTC pouch blends with an average price of 30$ for 2 ounces. I order from a not so distant land, 8 ounces of bulk with shipping and no duty as modest shipping and small quantities draw little attention. 3 different bulk blends that are good quality totalling 8 ounces plus shipping for about 40$ total. I just order every few months to build up stock. Even if I were to get hit with duty once in a while it’s still a bargain.

Keeping them small size is best. Just got two tins from SPC: duties were $30.42. Reasonable. Still cheaper than in town, and they're blends that Canadian stores don't carry anyway.
I never buy in bulk, maybe I should give it a try some time.

I’m an old codger at heart so I smoke my favorite blend or two mostly. I would like to get into some more experimenting with blends though as I’m a newer pipe smoker. I should order a few tins out of my comfort zone! Looks like my last post was posted twice, my apologies, I’m new!

No problem, it happens to old-timers too.
Thought for my N American friends- if you were to open and smoke a bowl from each tin you've picked up at your US address, might you greatly reduce or avoid those confiscatory duties??

We had a stroller delivered to buffalo and we took it back unpackaged. We saved about $500 in exchange and taxes.
Following that logic could you not enter with some mason jars, and leave with those same jars which had been in your possession the entire time though the contents may have adjusted/been swapped out during transit?

Monkfish - probably, with the stroller we brought both our kids, bought the stroller and unpacked it all, put it in the trunk and away we went. It was just the stroller we brought from home to anyone looking. You might have to explain what you're doing with mason jars full of pipe tobacco though!

Alberta has some of the highest tobacco taxes, it's ~$50 for a 50g tin, more if it's a boutique blend, less for OTC pouches. I will be ordering online for most purchases, 1-2 tins at a time, from now on. I still frequent the baccy shop for the odd ounce of bulk and to shoot the shit.

Michael, Based on where you crossed to the US, I believe that I live rather close to where you do: I live in Fort Langley. I know the CBSA woes. My worst experience was when SP.com sent me 89US worth of tobacco, and all the fees/taxes added up to me being billed ~ 266CDN -- which was so expensive that I disputed it. Adding insult to injury, when CBSA finally re-evaluated my package a few months later, they phoned me to let me know that there had indeed been a mistake, such that I really should've been charged 356CDN!! Needless to say, I know the Maple Leaf's pipe tobacco woes...

It's really sad that decent, law abiding, productive citizens are required to pay such fines for nothing more than wanting to enjoy the simple harmless pleasure of quality pipe tobacco.

FWIW, my home office / business area is a smoking area and does allow pipe enjoyer to visit.

Been informed Tobacco products are highly taxed and import under strict control in Australia as well, for what sake all these great and wealthy countries doing this?Lately I'm coming to understanding that Scandinavian countries laws concerning on the tobacco product imports might be a little bit less dragonian and enforced in somewhat lesser intensity than those in Australia or Canada though taxes and duties are similarly out of this world.

Smokingpipes.com and 4noggins are good places to get tobacco from here as well. I am not surprised they are cheaper than can be found in Canada, even after duties and taxes are collected.
