These heroes thrived in the newsprint comic books where they were born. When the first movie producer threw it on the desk of his overworked screenwriter, things started sliding downhill like a California mudslide. Kids reading these rumpled little comic books while waiting for extra cheap haircuts were the perfect audience. Everyone else is a voyeur.

I respect your point, and agree to some extent. However, I will say that Marvel movie versions are so good that they're attracting the non-comic book crowd. For example, my wife knew so little about the various Marvel comic characters (she knew of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor), that for her the additional stories and presentation has made her a fan of the movies. Not so much the DC counterparts where she knows of Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman and doesn't feel the same attraction to them.

lifesize', I think you're right. Kids have first and preeminent claim on these characters, but of course adults can always enjoy them, since there is mostly kid in everyone. I do think that the scrappy newsstand-cheap origins of the comics are part of their authenticity and charm (and power!) and adults can't ever fundamentally take them over. I met them waiting for my 25 cent haircut (my buddies' mom drove us into the city to get haircuts in this older woman's kitchen). The comic book heroes were more vivid there than they have ever been again.

Ah...I remember the same; I loved all the comics from the 60's as I grew up - Archie, Top Cat, Batman, Dick Tracy, Superman, Spiderman...many a day in the barber shop, read leather chairs and the cross-the-arms booster seats. The whirr of the clippers and the old men talking as bay run wafted in the air...
I needed that little trip.
