An earlier thread about Sherlock Holmes was started and I chimed in with Basil Rathbone as my favorite. Here's some of his full movies on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9vL5IVj1PI

Watson: "How does it work?"
Holmes: "Electricity. The high priest of false security."

I could never get over how bad a Watson Nigel Bruce was. He was far too doddering and sidekick-ish for me. Watson was more of a partner than a sidekick in the stories and he definitely wasn't as inept as Bruce made him out to be.

I get a kick out of Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. He's not like the Dr. Watson of the books but I do enjoy his "comedic" role in the series.

Thank you Mustang...

I've been looking for that particular movie to add to my collection.

I have never seen it before...

One of Rathbone's better films..

Thanks again.

On the radio Sherlock Holmes series, Nigel Bruce was a lot less buffoonish as Watson. As much as I love the Rathbone/Bruce movies, I think the radio show was better. www.archive.org has some of the shows available for free MP3 download.

I, too, loved the Rathbone take on SH, but as I got older I found a number of people have done excellent jobs in the role. We are all familiar with Jeremy Brett's performance on PBS, but how many of us remember Arthur Wortner and Ronald Howard?? They were also quite good in the role.
The Bruce take on Watson is generally looked down upon these days but in their time most folks found them very enjoyable. I, also, prefer, the competent Watsons, but Bruce's performances are enjoyable.

Sherlock Holmes has to be one of the iconic pipe smokers in literature and popular culture, along with

Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein, and maybe Huck Finn with his corncob pipe. I'm skeptical about

McArthur since he may have done the pipes strictly as a flourish. A country boy he wasn't. Any others

for a pipe smoking celebrity hall of fame? Stalin was a mass murderer, so doesn't make my list, but

pick and choose as you will. The power and charm of Holmes was that the pipe was a means to his

work, a sort of stimulant to his circuitous creative thinking that took his intense observations and fused

them into a synthesis and analysis of how crimes were committed.

I have all the links to ALL the BR movies on youtube. Surprised they are all there. For some info, I just got back from our annual west german slow smoking competition. I got 50:10. Not the best time, but it was better than last year's time. A member of our team got the best time of 1:38:??. I'm glad he was on OUR team. Not SH related, but thought y'all would be interested.

Basil Rathbone seems to be what most people think of as the ultimate on-screen Holmes, and he was outstanding. Jeremy Brett was very good too, emphasizing Holmes' quirkiness more than any other portrayer. I'm among those who never cared for the bumbling, doddering Watson as Nigel Bruce played him, but all is forgiven, since the movies were so good.

Ok, I loved BR too, but I also think that Poirot in "Murder on the Links" is an excellent movie, with the sub-plot all about the French detective's pipe. Granted, Poirot isn't for everyone, but this one is worth watching just for the pipe scenes. It looks like a rustic Rosslare, but it might be a Savinelli.

That was a great Poirot. He's challenged in France by the highest French detective to see who can solve the crime first. If the Frenchman loses he will hand over his famous pipe that he's always puffing on and if Poirot loses he will have to cut off his famous moustache. Great episode with that guy smoking his pipe a ton. Beautiful pipe too.

Was on ebay a few minutes ago, searching for a pipe cabinet. Saw a wonderful cabinet with Sherlock Holmes etched into the glass. Beautiful but too pricy for me - bidding was starting at $200 plus another $30 for shipping.
I use to be a cabinet maker, guess I'll just have to quit being lazy.
