I have a Barling pipe without a stem, and am wondering if it would be worth the cost of sending it off for a new stem. It is marked "Barling", "London England","Garnet Grain" and has the number 4185. From Pipedia, it looks like this is from the transition era, about 1962. Looking at prices on eBay, Barlings are all over the place.
A local tobaconnist has a place they send pipes off to, and they told me $16-18 for a stem, which I'm guessing would be acrylic. I think vulcanite stems are about $26.

You're trying to send a photo from a Google account. It wants me to log in to Google to see it. Ain't a gonna happen. You can upload an image to your account here at PM, or to another image hosting site, like imgur.
A garnet grain could be as early as late 1962, though most are later. It was made in the Barling factory before they were shut down and Imperial outsourced production. The garnet grain was the successor to the Ye Olde Wood models, with a plumb stain. If the pipe is in otherwise good condition it's worth having it stemmed. The designations "Transition" vs "Post-Transition" are largely nebulous. There's only about 7 to 8 months worth of production that can be accurately dated to the "Transition" period, and the Garnet Grains aren't part of that.
The ones that I've seen are pretty nicely made.

Google images are extremely long and a pain in the ass, but they can work. But your embedded URL is missing 4-5 more lines of code.
This is what's in the first one, broken up to not show as a link:

Sorry about the original pics not showing. For some reason I can't edit my original post.
