I notice from all the picks of pipes, I haven’t seen any bamboo stems. Do any of you have them and like them?

I have one, a straight Dublin by the late Bob Hayes, an award winning N.C. carver that I bought from him at a TAPS pipe show. I went for a final round of the tables at the end of the show, and he made me an incredible offer, about sixty percent off by my reckoning. It's a beautiful pipe I very much enjoy smoking. Likely anything by Hayes is good. I don't like all bamboo shanks, but this one is superb.

There are posts, some with photos all over the site. Use the search function if wish. Some folk really like a piece of panda food on their pipes. Personally I find it "jarring". But, that's just me.

Bamboo is light relative to briar, which is nice if its a pipe with a long shank. Bamboo is extremely strong, and also low maintenance in terms of keeping it looking good. It can be very handsome in the hands of the right maker. Its a great material for pipes.

I love bamboo, I think it looks amazing. I do prefer it sleeved though as I've had stems that shredded pipe cleaners.

I have a straight razor with fake bamboo scales. It was popular even in the 1800's.

I got one from Julius Vesz the outstanding Canadian carver. Unfortunately, I learned that bamboo stems suck for me.

I picked up a beautiful long stemmed bamboo apple from maker Tim Beaumont (@papabearspipes) on Instagram. It's a wonderful smoker and has some of the best lines and curvature of any pipe in my collection. Bamboo really makes for a nice light stem, and looks fantastic, in my opinion. Currently running Carter Hall through it for the break in period.

I like it when it has mellowed in color. It's a little stark for my taste on new pipes. I have just one, a 50s Dunhill W60.

I love bamboo's aesthetic and renewability, but I cannot get used to the look of it on pipes...it always looks like a bony finger to me and consequently appears a bit...disturbing. Weird, I know.
