Bamboo Extensions

I was perusing some pipes, having a look and trying to beat back the PAD.
Anyhoo....I find the use of bamboo extentions an odd look and a total turn off to the otherwise beautiful aesthetic of the pipe its used on.
Horn, I don't mind.
Mastodon ivory is awesome.
Bamboo...ack.
Anyone else find it odd?

I also find it odd, I personally think it makes the pipe look cheap and unfinished...

There used to be an advert over to the left of the page, (many of us remember), that was almost enough to make one want one... as long as it came with the picture.

It took me awhile to acquire a taste for bamboo, especially since there are few

Carvers of Meerschaums that even attempt it. I prefer short one or two knuckle

lengths that are well integrated into the Pipes form and do not use metal tubes

to stabilize the extension. I only have two such Pipes and they are both carved

by Fikri Baki. The break in involves seasoning the bamboo as well as the Meerschaum.

They smoke well.

I have never cared for the look of bamboo on a pipe, with the exception of one or two I have seen that were carved to look like bamboo.

I have two pipes with bamboo....a Tsuge and a Stanwell...they are nice and light and good smokers....Aloha!

A few have caught by eye, but I've yet to see one I had to have.

Thanks Krgulik. It was many years before I saw anyone use

bamboo with Meerschaum and longer before I saw any that appealed

to me,that I could fit into my modest budget.

I like the bamboo if done right. Most of the ones Ive seen I liked the look of have been Japanese pipes or just high end pipes in general.

What I find odd are the pipes with faces on the end. I'm not too keen on smoking out of someones carved head.

I think claws are sort of stylish, not that I have one or will get one. Bamboo, nah, don't like the look. Skulls...no, don't like those either.

Fred your two meers with the bambbo extentions are nice. I have been looking for one to add to my growing meer collection but the price must be reasonable.

Igloo nailed it. IMO pipe makers who use bamboo are struggling for ideas. They'll find buyers,

but it's a novelty thing. The next thing ya know, they'll be makin' pipes outta clay!
I'll take the Asian chick, but you can keep the pipe.

Yes, it is an Altinok pipe, although not mine - it is from his site. I think you have to special order it and then they'll make it for you.
Does the bamboo offer a drier smoking experience, I wonder.
