I just listened to the report, and I don’t think they care. If they could have illegalized tobacco and vapes totally, they would have thrown a city wide party. I think it’s good that we have different folks, with different laws. Diversity is good. That’s why we have states and cities. I just don’t care anything about going there. There are lots of other places in the US that I’d rather spend my vacation money.
Are there even pipe shops that aren’t head or vape shops there? Isn’t Sutliff in San Francisco, or somewhere thereabouts?

Yes, eventually they will. All change starts with a paper cut and then grows to a gaping wound once the political screws are turne
100% agree! This has very little to do with anything other than the liberals finding a platform they can actually get passed. There aren't enough pipe smoking votes to matter to these crooked scumbags so we'll be thrown under the bus eventually. I don't known the when but I suspect pipe tobacco will be gone to the common man in the not so distant future. I am so convinced of that I'm proactively working towards building up a 250 pound cellar as soon as I can. Mostly a matter of my choices in tobacco becoming available again in the quantities I wish to purchase and this will be a done deal.

I remember when I said that 250 lbs was when I was going to stop also, ha ha. Then, the more I smoked the more optimistic I became about my longevity
I don't recall saying I'd stop at 250. LOL. That's the minimal objective.

You can get it flavored with chocolate, (as in brownies), and flavored cookies and gum, for starters.

Tutti frutti, anyone??
There was some speculation/consternation regarding edible THC enticing young folks in the TERRIBLE habit of smoking MJ. The recreational law was passed here anyway some years ago, and studies have shown that since that time overall youth MJ consumption has decreased. Not to mention the awesome tax revenue and decreased burden on the justice system.
If only Washington regarded tobacco so favorably.

Friggin idiots.

Public sex street parties are ok, but don’t mint your cigs!!

No cheers.
Don't forget urinating in public as well. It really scares me what people come up with these days as OK.

Born and raised in San Francisco, and return regularly to visit family. And, yes, I vote Democrat. First off, there aren't any true tobacconists left anyway. Sherlock's Haven went away in 2006 and Grant's closed in the last few years. You can't buy any "decent" pipe tobacco in the city anyway — no offense if you do like Prince Albert or Half and Half. The other thing is that they tax the crap out of tobacco as it is. I was golfing during Xmas at the Presidio with my pipe and the guys I was playing with were smoking cigarettes. A pack is $10-12, depending on location of purchase. During The Great McClelland Panic of 2017-18, I checked out some old local B&Ms and found Briar Patch in Sacramento for some Dark Star and Backwoods. I paid $24 for an 100g tin, as an out of stater. When I got the tins, they had $45 price tags. $45 (in-state) for 100g? Yeesh. That said, when I do visit family in the city, I am a scofflaw, and smoke my pipe in public parks — it's against the law. In fairness, it's technically illegal to smoke MJ too, but no one seems to be enforcing any smoking ban. (I got no trouble smoking my pipe.) And, yes, they're taxing the heck out of MJ. Being a good son I buy for my Mom, and the same type of MJ is $27 bucks more expensive in California than Colorado. San Francisco and California just tax the crap out of everything.

Nowadays I try not to pay excess attention to the day-to-day insanity. Especially when it comes from a crazy town like SF.
Unfortunately, we pipesmokers are a relatively tiny group. We are an easy target for politicians. Even the cigar folks have more pull, given the importance of Florida in the presidential elections. And I’ve read that even the Florida cigar industry doesn’t have the influence that it used to have.
There are always those enthusiastic about outlawing what the Other guy enjoys. In some states with aggressive anti tobacco laws, they have pot stores in just about every town. Pot smokers out number tobacco pipe smokers by a wide margin, so there ya go.
Long term, maybe growing & processing one’s own tobacco is the ultimate solution. Well, at least till they outlaw That.

The nice thing about growing tobacco is that unless someone has worked in fields with it, no one knows what it is. Even if they outlawed it, it would be very hard to figure out what is growing along with the corn and squash. BTW, it is great for keeping bugs off of your cabbage and squash, as the nicotine is a great deterrent for bugs. But, tobacco doesn't have a distinct smell or leaf pattern that is as identifiable as pot.
Most guys are afraid of curing the tobacco, but it isn't rocket science. It just takes a little bit of knowledge and a whole lot of art. And, even if you mess up, you still get something that is pretty good. My favorite smokes are the ones that I thought that I had totally messed up the cure on.

Just "flavored"? Srsly? Sir Walter Raleigh or Granger are OK?? I mean, OK, yeah, I think we can do without Pepto-Bismol- or chocolate-candy-apple-raspberry- tobacco, but please, let's use our dang brains, shall we? It's almost as imbecilic an idea as some of the pro-gun or anti-choice ballot initiatives out there. Legislatures don't seem to want to actually *think*-think any more; they appear to prefer emotional "thinking," idiotic as it may be. Toopid, just dang toopid.... -growl-

Maybe a bit of an over-reaction from us, as I could find no tobacco stores that actually carried an aromatic pipe tobacco, and reports from those living there say there are no pipe shops, unless you are talking about glass pipes and bongs. So, no businesses are really going to be effected. And, one would have to be a moron to try to start a pipe and tobacco business in San Fransisco, the city where tofu and bean sprouts are on the city's damned seal. I don't believe you can even own anything that runs of gasoline there also.
So, this is about as dramatic as outlawing dog sleds in Miami.

It seems to me to be another instance of ignorant people putting forth legislation before doing any research. There's so much to pipe smoking that even 50yr old cigar smokers are like, "Yeah, there's way too much involved for me to smoke a pipe. I'd rather just cut a cigar light it and smoke it.". It would highly surprise me if there are 12yr olds out there buying Grabows and puffing away on some Captain Black Royal.

I listened to the NPR report. The law used the "appeal to stop children" thing, but it was clearly just a step towards making smoking totally illegal in the city, and they stated that this is their goal. Five more years, and getting caught with a cigarette in your car will get you fined or jailed.

If there are any pipe smokers in San Francisco, then get the hell out of there. Come to Alabama, where you can still get a steak and smoke your pipe at the table at most restaurants. And, even places that have no smoking policies will tell you face to face that no one is going to enforce it. The only drawback is that in Alabama, you will only make 10% of what you can earn in California. We have way more poverty, but everyone smokes, so it's ok. :puffy:

My concern is that California often sets the stage for the rest of the nation. It isn't hard for me to imagine this initiative passing in San Francisco now, other California cities later, and then similar initiatives across the country. I actually think they got the marijuana think right. I don't think any drug should be illegal. Treat the drug addicts as a public health menace. What my neighbor wants to do in the privacy of his home is his own damn business; the government ought to keep out of it.

You're 100% correct Seldom (as opposed to others who are seldom correct).
And California is just one big test bed for social engineering experiments.
