I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the insight.
The Va/Per version of Three Nuns is JimInks' favorite tobacco of all time. He recently sent me a sample and suggested that I try out the Savinelli branded blend as he finds it a pretty good version. I have to say that I was impressed with it. It hits the notes, and you don't have to spend $100 for a tin of the stuff.

I agree with most of what's been said also, but that wasn't my point. It's the thread in which you choose to do so that I don't like.

Saddle rush, thanks for the tip re: the Savinelli blend, just ordered a tin. Of course, which version of the 3Nuns VA/Per it resembles will be interesting. :)

Guyrox, not sure I follow. No secret that MacBaren' manufactures both. That it tastes a lot like the VaPer version of 3Nuns is nice to know.

Never tried it, but USD 25 is a bit too expensive for a brand that gets negative reviews.. You are not even enticed to try it

Hmm 3.7 score on tobaccoreviews.com .. Other blends have 4, the only ones I have seen score so high. I guess there's a lot of subjectivity involved here

Not as much as you may think. You are looking at reviews for the older Balkan Sobranie productions, which has an average rating of 3.7: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/1525/sobranie-of-london-the-balkan-sobranie#review56239
Here's the reviews for the current version, which gets an average rating of 3.3: http://www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/5204/j-f-germain-son-balkan-sobranie

It's interesting to me when I read through those reviews, in that, they appear to be skewed by those who smoked the older versions? If one were to take out all the 1 and 2 star reviews by folks who start their reviews out by stating things like, 'I smoked the old version in the 60's, 80's, etc...', the rating would actually be close to the older versions. I would take ratings with a grain of salt. All it takes is a few people with greater frames of reference added to a primarily straight Virginia smoker among a dozen or so reviewers to turn a very good Balkan blend into an okay Balkan blend.

Hearth and Home Whiteknight will blow you away with how much better it is than BS.
For certain, and much better than about anything else in my opinion. I place it on a par with the OLD, OLD MM 965 of Alfred days. I never thought anything could knock C&D Engine 99 off my top spot (since 2009) but with that blend no longer being what it used to be and this now available, well....there you go. Price differences be damned, in some things cost does not matter.

I am stocking up on it due to FDA junk. Think I'll pack some right now.

An imperfect immitation is not worth this price.

There are many others out there, with only difference being the blender and the tin

Then why direct people to it? It's obviously the overwhelming majority opinion of those who smoked the old versions, but someone like myself doesn't have that context to use for shaping an opinion. I've only smoked the latest releases (which I still believe there to be two versions of) and like it a little more than the comparative blends mentioned.
I do agree that a $10 tin of White Knight is better than a $25 tin of Balkan Sobranie. Although, I would argue that a $10 tin of White Knight is not necessarily better than a $12.50 tin of Balkan Sobranie. It really is subjective in my opinion, and may be objective for those with prior experience, which again I understand. Maybe we can all agree that Borkum Riff Whiskey isn't worth any amount of money?

I'd direct someone interested in a good Balkan towards Black House myself,

Having tasted Blue mountain and White Night, I think BH has them beat.
I shared the link because I know some people enjoy it, not because I do.

Mothernature: even if I never had smoked the older version of Balkan Sobranie White, I would have rated the new version at two stars. There are a lot of English blends on the market that are better and at a cheaper price, too. I rated the new versus other blends in the same genre, not against the old manufacture. I only compared the new to the old for the historical record, and also as an explanation as I had previously reviewed the older version, to which I gave four stars. I do these things when ever I can, including comparing Match blends to the originals.

Fair enough. I have read many of your reviews Jim and know that you truly try to be objective and non-biased. I know that everyone really does have the best interest of new smokers and others who are out there thinking about dropping $25-$45 on a tin of tobacco when there are other blends just as good or better. I've only been smoking a pipe for about 5 years now, but over those 5 years have been subjected to the negative opinions of more experienced smokers on many subjects, primarily new versions of old blends. Not everyone is as thoughtful as you Jim, in that, I find some just want to rant, usually done with great tact, but it can still make some feel like suckers or dummies when he/she is just doing his/her thing. In the end, I like White Knight, Blackhouse, Blue Mountain (Balkan Blue), Magnum Opus, Brebbia Balkan Flake, Ashton Artisan Blend, SH Exotique, etc, etc, etc., but the new version of Balkan Sobranie is my favorite of the entire bunch and well worth the $12.50 a tin I paid for them.

I find totally hilarious the fact that Savinelli Doblono d'Oro is a closer match to the original Three Nuns than the current Three Nuns.

Why is it so hilarious? Because Mac Baren manufactures Doblono d'Oro.
It has to do with licensing rights. The "original" Three Nuns was made in several versions, including a Virginia Kentucky version. The version that Mac Baran was licensed to make was the Virginia Kentucky, not the Va/Per.
So when they developed a match to the Va/Per version they couldn't call it Three Nuns because they have no right to call it Three Nuns. Just be happy that they developed a match and you can smoke it.
