@ hiplainsdrifter,
And once again you're taking quotes and bastardizing them about to suit your inane comments. You quoted trailboss and combined it with something I said as one quote! Also, trailboss never said that he purchased White Knight from P&C much less saying that P&C was 'evil'! Disagreeing with what one says is one thing and quite understandable on any given forum site, but misquoting, altering quotes and placing words in another ones mouth is a whole different matter.

vfefrenzy's take on the issue resonates with me.

Price gouging applies when the consumer has no choice (e.g., gasoline or milk, etc.)

Stand-up guys like Rich at 4noggins charge competitive prices to generate good will -- which pays-off in the long run.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. When we run Stanwell pipes at a minimal profit, no one complains, but when we do this, we get vilified. Interestingly, when we sold it for less, we got angry emails about running out in minutes because people would order 50 tins to sell on eBay. Why do you think that, in spite of my personal concerns, we developed WhiteKnight? I'm sorry for anyone who's upset.

Your store you can charge what you wish Russ. No hard feelings here. If I dont like a price I just dont buy. And I happen to like most of your prices :)

Not so fast. How about limiting sales to a handful per customer? A widely-implemented solution to exactly this state of affairs.
The decision to grab profit during a period of scarcity is yours, and I'm sure you'll come out ahead financially for now. ...But it's carefully noted that some of your more ethical (or if that's too strong a word, more "customer-friendly") competitors have not been taking this step.
Speaking for myself, this is the most recent of several P&C missteps since the sale of the business, and I'm increasingly disappointed in how the company has chosen to act.

I got the email alert earlier today, but being that I got to the message a couple hours after it was sent I didn't even bother to open the email as I figured all the stock was gone. Not like I could buy any right now anyway, but $34 is absurd! I've bought all my tins for $10.49 t0 S13.49. I love the stuff but I'm not paying more than $15 for it.

I'm enjoying the P&C Christams/December catalog and I think they've offered some really good values.

I recommend the Build a Sampler offer of 5 tins of various picks of tins for $29.99. (pg.37)

White Knight is one of the choices, and one of the tins I have yet to pop from MY chosen samples.

I'm still exploring the Balkan Sasieni, HH 10/12, SPC MR and Nightcap. Not a bad selection in the bunch!

For the people that can afford it, good for them. I don't have that type of money for that tin. Get some Solani English Luxury and you'll be pleasantly surprised how good it is.

I few years ago when I had some money I bought two boxes of some Padron Anniversary, 4 per box, a salomen. Within the hour this cigar company called ME and tried to sell me something else. Needless to say I've never done business with them again. Of all the deadly sins, greed is so firmly entrenched in the world that we hardly notice it. It's called capitalism (not saying that a market economy is all bad), making one's way in the world, building a nest egg for retirement.

I'm 5 or so bowls into my first tin of the stuff. I think I paid $12, and I'm not sure it's worth even that to me. I'm pretty underwhelmed, and I had no real expectations going into this.

There is nothing " wrong " with what P& C is doing but they should consider the effects on the customers trust. I usually just buy my bacci from P & C w/o much price shopping . But in this case and in the case of Wessex gold brick I find I should start shopping around more . The short term profit should be considered against the cost of losing customer trust . I think this was a questionable decision by an otherwise excellent business and I still will be giving them my business.

What is going on in China? I get random, unsolicited emails constantly offering insane prices they are willing to pay for Penzance/Stonehaven/BS.
Are you in China? I guess its that imported pipe tobacco is not "legitimate" here. So basically it's a black market in China.

Thank goodness I don't smoke any of those "highly desirable" and "rare" blends! I'll just stick with my 1Q, 1957 & Barrel No. 76 and be plenty happy to boot. :nana: Caveat Emptor!!!
BTW - Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. Smoke it if you got it. :puffy:

phil67, I don't need to wordsmith your comments to make you look like a jerk. I clearly don't know how to use the quote feature well. I had no intention of misquoting you, and I apologize if you took it that way. In interest of the community spirit of this forum, I will decline to squabble with you any longer.
