Ted, Balkan Sobranie didn't use Syrian after the very early 1960s. Just like everyone else, they switched to Cyprian after Syria stopped producing it. Once their stocks were depleted, that was it. After Gallaher bought the company in 1980, the Sobranie blends changed dramatically, and not just once. I agree that Sasieni isn't really like Sobranie, but the question remains, "Which Sobranie?" The Latakia content of the "real" thing ranged from 50% to 35% during different "vintages," and the fabled Yenidje tobacco was absent by the early 1980s.
