Motor runs nice for test run. Now my next project will be to wire it more securely and then I'll figure out how to add a switch. Thanks again for all the help.

Here is my first attempt. not bad for $50 bucks(plus the beall buffing system) and some spare wires from around the house. Still have to set it to a base. Does anybody know if the high pitch sound while the motor is winding down is something to be concerned about? I'd like to get a couple of years out of this.

You did good. The on/off switch on the surge protector would be fine for on/off. I would recommemd moving the buffer away from the computer. You don't want the fine buffing powder getting into your electronics. Should I also suggest eye protection and breath protection?

Haha. You got that right (havin enough Pc problems as it is). Gonna set it on a base of some sort. Eye/breath protection noted...I'll get them before I use the compounds. Thanks for the heads up.

yeah i was gonna say, either a computer doesn't belong in a woodshop, or power tools don't belong in the computer room.

As for the whine on decelleration. The motor you have is split phase and uses a centrifigal switch to disconnect the start capacitor (housed on top the motor). As motor winds down you will normally have that whine, followed by a click as the switch actually trips back to the closed position. As for motor life span the switch and capacitor are the weakest components. Where practical avoid rapid start-stop cycles. Baldor motors are common and repair parts are not very expensive. You did well at $50 for that motor.
