I called the studio this morning and discovered that that very common occurrence with firing sculptures happened: the Cthulhu idol blew up in the kiln. Not to worry though: the pieces might be repaired with epoxy and Bondo, then spray painted. But I'm going to bring home some clay and possibly made a new idol without the ruse of making it in the studio, using the exploded version as a model. So all is not lost, merely postponed. Aw well, these things are common in the ceramic world.

Your persistence is noteworthy, Sparrow. It's clear you did a lot of work the first time around. Clay can definitely be a bother in the finishing stages like that. I hope the second run turns out.

Cthulhu iies dead dreaming, and will rise again, so say I! But now I will know what mistakes I made from examing the pieces, and will start anew. I'm not done yet.

Why does that happen? Not enough drying pre-firing and bubbles go boom? Like a Gawith flake?

Oh man...sorry to hear that Fred. That is a lot of time and effort gone. Good to hear you are not giving up on the project though...good luck next round. :puffy:

Well, I'm not giving up. In examining the pieces, I saw too many sculptural aspects that came out well, even innovative. So once I reassemble the pieces with exoxy, I'm going to rebuild the idol. I'm not defeated yet!

Just do not go mad in the process. You know how that works out, its always slow. A piece here, a piece there. You convince yourself its OK, that everything is fine. But everyone sees you slipping but you...

Here's the restored version of the sculpture: in retrospect, while I'm sure I performed errors in sculpting the idol, I also think it didn't have adequate time to dry. So I'll use this reassembled version of the idol to act as a model for another, hopefully better sculpture. I have not yet begun to fight!
